50 Years of Implant Dentistry at Loma Linda University
It was a privilege to participate in the celebration of the 50-year anniversary of the Loma Linda University Implant Dentistry program—an incredible gathering of implant dentists, educators, mentors, alumni, and friends from around the world.
For me personally, it was especially meaningful to reconnect with some of the people who helped teach and mentor me earlier in my career. Many have since become friends and colleagues, but they remain mentors as well.
As an Associate Professor at Loma Linda University and a practicing implant dentist, I value being on both sides of education: teaching other dentists while continuing to learn from them.
Implant dentistry continues to evolve rapidly. New technology is important, but so are experience, scientific evidence, collaboration, and the willingness to keep learning throughout one's career.
This anniversary was much more than a reunion. It was an outstanding continuing education event, an opportunity to exchange ideas with colleagues from around the world, reconnect with old friends, and make new ones.
I am grateful and proud to be part of this remarkable professional community—and I came home with some wonderful memories and renewed enthusiasm for what we do every day at Pacific Coast Implant Center.

Our patients often see Dr. Proussaefs as their implant dentist. Outside the office, he has also spent many years teaching implant dentistry to other dentists.
Next week, he will serve as a moderator at the 50th Anniversary Loma Linda University Implant Symposium, joining a distinguished group of implant educators and clinicians from around the world.
Teaching keeps us connected to new ideas, research, technology, and the highest standards of clinical care—and ultimately, that knowledge comes back to benefit our patients.
We are proud to be part of this important milestone in implant dentistry.

Full-arch implant dentistry doesn't end when the prosthesis is fabricated.
The final characterization can be an important part of creating a natural-looking definitive restoration. Color, translucency, surface texture and gingival characterization can all influence how we perceive the final result.
Shown here are different stages in the fabrication and finishing of a full-arch implant prosthesis, including detailed characterization with MiYO liquid ceramics, followed by the clinical result.
It is an interesting intersection of digital dentistry, prosthodontics and artistry—where relatively small finishing details can make a significant difference in the appearance of the final restoration

Does getting a dental implant hurt? 🦷
For many patients, the anticipation is actually worse than the procedure itself.
Modern anesthesia, sedation when appropriate, careful treatment planning, and gentle surgical technique can make dental implant treatment much more comfortable than many people imagine.

Is there an age limit for dental implants?
There is no specific upper age limit.
When we evaluate someone for dental implants, we look at medical health, bone quality, healing capacity and the overall treatment plan—not simply the patient's age.
In fact, many patients in their 70s and 80s can be excellent candidates for implant treatment, particularly when they are looking for a more stable solution than traditional dentures.
With proper evaluation and careful planning, age by itself does not have to stand in the way of dental implant treatment.
In implant dentistry, biology and planning matter far more than age.

A great day of advanced clinical education and hands-on training!
Dr. Periklis Proussaefs recently taught a Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF) course for fellow dentists through the California Institute of Dental Education (CIDE)®.
The program included a live patient surgical demonstration, clinical instruction, and hands-on training focused on the use of PRF in implant dentistry, bone grafting, and surgical procedures.
PRF uses components derived from the patient’s own blood to create fibrin-based preparations that can be incorporated into a variety of surgical and regenerative procedures.
At Pacific Coast Implant Center, we believe that advanced clinical care and education go hand in hand. Teaching other dentists also means continually studying, evaluating, and refining the techniques we use in our own clinical practice.

Advancing Patient Care Through Education
One of the most rewarding parts of my career is not only treating patients, but also having the opportunity to teach fellow dentists.
This month, I will be presenting a hands-on continuing education workshop on autologous blood concentrates (PRP, PRF, and i-PRF) through the California Institute of Dental Education (CIDE).
These biologic techniques utilize a patient's own blood to create concentrated growth factors that can support healing and are frequently incorporated into implant surgery, bone grafting, sinus augmentation, and other regenerative procedures.
At Pacific Coast Implant Center, these protocols are part of our daily clinical practice when appropriate for each individual patient. We believe that continuing education and evidence-based dentistry help us provide the highest standard of care.
The workshop includes lectures, hands-on laboratory training, and a live patient demonstration, allowing participating dentists to gain practical experience they can bring back to their own practices.

This weekend, I had the privilege of teaching another 3-day Adult Oral Sedation Certification course for dentists from across California.
As much as I enjoy treating patients, I also enjoy sharing the knowledge and experience I have gained over the past three decades with fellow dental professionals. It is incredibly rewarding to see colleagues expand their skills so they can help more patients receive comfortable dental care.
At Pacific Coast Implant Center, education has always been an important part of our philosophy. By staying actively involved in teaching and continuing education, we remain committed to bringing the latest techniques, technology, and evidence-based care to our own patients.

Digital dentistry continues to transform the way we restore smiles.
At Pacific Coast Implant Center, we routinely combine advanced digital technologies—including 3D imaging, intraoral scanning, digital photography, and photogrammetry—to help design immediate fixed teeth for patients undergoing full-arch implant treatment.
This digital workflow allows us to plan treatment with exceptional precision while improving comfort and efficiency throughout the process. In many cases, patients can leave surgery with a beautiful set of fixed temporary teeth the very same day.
Every patient is unique, and technology is only one part of the equation. Experience, careful planning, and attention to detail remain essential to achieving predictable, long-lasting results.
We are also excited to share that our digital full-arch workflow is currently being prepared for publication in a scientific journal. We look forward to sharing more as our research progresses.
