Ever wondered what different types of dental cleanings mean? Tune in today to hear Alyssa give us all the details!
1️⃣ Prophylaxis aka “prophy” - a preventative cleaning to remove plaque and tartar, what typically happens every 6 months at your dental appointment.
2️⃣ Full Mouth Debridement - for people with heavy tartar buildup, or if it’s been a couple years since your last dental visit.
3️⃣ Scaling with Inflammation - a gum treatment to treat gingivitis, hopefully preventing the disease from progressing and prevent the need for a future deep cleaning.
4️⃣ Scaling and Root Planing aka “SRP” aka “Deep Cleaning” - a medical treatment for active gum disease, with a goal to create a healthy environment for your gums to heal.
5️⃣ Periodontal Maintenance - this cleaning is essentially disease control for anyone with a history of gum disease, typically performed every 3-4 months.
🦷✨ Fun Fact: Once you’ve had a Deep Cleaning, you don’t go back to the standard Prophylaxis cleanings - you move to Periodontal Maintenance cleanings to protect the progress you made during your Deep Cleaning.
💭 If your hygienist recommends a certain type of cleaning, it’s because we’re looking at what’s happening beneath the surface to keep your teeth and bone as healthy as possible in the long run.
