My 2027 speaking calendar is filling up! 🎤🦷

After 27 years in dentistry and more than 17 years working with patients with intellectual and developmental disabilities, my passion for educating and empowering dental professionals continues to grow.

My mission is simple: to help clinicians feel more confident, prepared, and compassionate when caring for patients with special healthcare needs and dementia.

I bring real clinical experience, practical strategies, and a little humor to every presentation because continuing education should be engaging, meaningful, and something you can actually put into practice on Monday morning!

Same toothbrush style. Very different cleaning power.

The toothbrush on the left has bristles that are still straight and able to reach where they need to go.
The toothbrush on the right has bristles that are frayed, bent, and no longer working as effectively.

When bristles wear out, they do not clean as well along the gumline or between teeth. That means you may be brushing every day and still not getting the results you think you are.

A worn toothbrush is a simple thing, but it can make a big difference in your oral hygiene routine.

Take a look at your toothbrush today. If the bristles are flaring, bending, or looking worn, it is probably time for a replacement.

How often do you change yours?

🪥 You missed a spot. Actually, several! 👀🦷

What if you could actually SEE the plaque you’re leaving behind when you brush?

Well, you can!

That pink/purple you’re seeing isn’t tooth decay or staining from something someone ate. It’s plaque that’s been made visible using a disclosing solution.

Plaque is a sticky, nearly invisible biofilm that constantly forms on our teeth. And here’s the tricky part: Just because your teeth look clean doesn’t mean they are!

Disclosing solutions temporarily stain plaque, making it easier to see exactly where your brushing and flossing techniques might need a little extra attention.

🔍 Look closely at this photo. Notice where the pink/purple shows up? Along the gumline, between teeth, and even across surfaces that might look perfectly clean without the dye.

When plaque isn’t adequately removed, it can contribute to cavities, gingivitis, and eventually periodontal disease.

The good news? You don’t have to guess where you’re missing! Plaque-disclosing tablets and solutions can be used at home to help improve your oral hygiene routine.

💡 Here’s a challenge: Try using a plaque-disclosing product after brushing and cleaning between your teeth. You might be surprised by what you find!

And remember, brushing harder isn’t the answer. Brushing more effectively is.

👇 Dental professionals, have you ever used disclosing solution to show a patient what they’re missing? And everyone else, would you try this at home?

Dental Hygiene Month has me thinking about how much my work has changed over the past 27 years.

I’ve continued learning, added new instruments, switched to piezo instrumentation, and expanded my approach to biofilm management with Advanced Biofilm Therapy. Laser and other adjunctive therapies have become part of my toolkit, too.

Dental hygiene keeps evolving, and so do I. I’m grateful for the chance to keep learning and consider different ways to care for each patient.

Dental hygienists: what’s changed the most in your practice over the years?

The dental side of Special Olympics Texas is all about helping athletes build healthy smiles through dental screenings and education. It was my privilege to support Willo and Special Olympics Texas and be part of a day focused on making oral health care welcoming, encouraging, and accessible.

I’m grateful for the opportunity to support these athletes and the important work happening through Special Olympics Texas.
