🦷 Did you know some kids have extra teeth?

They’re called supernumerary teeth! While they’re considered rare, I see them fairly often as a pediatric dentist.

The most common place we find them is in the front of the upper jaw, right beneath the nose, between the two front teeth. One of the coolest things about them? They don’t always grow toward the mouth. Some are actually positioned upside down, pointing toward the nose!

These teeth need to be monitored carefully because the timing of removal matters. We want to protect the healthy permanent teeth that are still developing underneath.

Some supernumerary teeth can be removed by a pediatric dentist. Others, especially those that are deeper in the bone, are typically removed by an oral surgeon, often with sedation.

Many children don’t even know they have one, that’s why routine dental exams and X-rays are so valuable.
