🦷 Why Does My Child Need Phase 1 Orthodontic Treatment?

Sometimes, orthodontic treatment isn’t just about straightening teeth—it’s about correcting the way the jaws are developing.

A crossbite is one example of a skeletal or jaw-related issue that may benefit from early treatment. When identified during childhood, Phase 1 orthodontics can help guide jaw development and correct the bite while a child is still growing.

Why does timing matter? ⏰

If certain skeletal problems are left untreated until adolescence or adulthood, the jaw relationship may become more difficult to correct. In some cases, treatment can become significantly more involved and may even require jaw surgery once growth is complete.

The good news? Early evaluation can make a big difference.

Phase 1 treatment doesn’t necessarily mean your child will avoid braces later—but addressing the right problem at the right time can help create a healthier foundation for future orthodontic treatment.

👉 The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children have their first orthodontic evaluation by age 7. Early evaluation doesn’t mean early treatment—it means knowing whether treatment is needed, and when the timing is best.
