NIGHTMARE HIRES
A recent article I posted from Becker's Dental & DSO reported a bookkeeper was able to embezzle over $67K in one month from her Endodontist employer. She had red flags from the beginning - fake diploma - that could have prevented this from ever happening. Our "DBS Advantage" subscription service could have prevented this hire, saved the doctor from months of legal headaches and only cost 0.0001% of what he lost.
If nothing else, please use a hiring workflow like the one we've illustrated below. Another option is to use recruiting firms like Arthur Marshall (https://img1.wsimg.com/isteam/ip/6a3a946d-3f2e-42fa-b108-cd8e14789ab0/Arthur%20Marshall.png/:/cr=t:0%25,l:0%25,w:100%25,h:100%25/rs=w:417,h:100,cg:true). The important thing is to make good hiring decisions that aren't so costly.

It took just 1 month for her to steal over $63K. There were so many ways to prevent this, starting with a simple background check.

A St. Augustine, Fla., bookkeeper who allegedly presented a fake Vanderbilt University master’s degree to obtain her position has been charged with stealing more than $63,000 from an endodontist, the St. Johns Citizen reported Aug. 24. Heather Dettra was hired as bookkeeper for Robert Thousand III...

The 5 Controversies affecting Dentistry right now:
1. Dental Hygienist Licensing Debate (Nevada)
The Issue: A proposed bill in Nevada introduces an alternative pathway for dental hygienist licensing.
The Conflict: The American Dental Hygienists’ Association (ADHA) is actively opposing the provision, raising concerns over standards and training.
Key Takeaway: Balancing workforce shortages with professional standard preservation.

2. DSO Practice Ownership Rights (Colorado)
The Issue: The Colorado Dental Board passed an amendment barring Dental Support Organizations (DSOs) from owning dental practices.
The Conflict: The Association of Dental Support Organizations (ADSO) filed a legal challenge against the board's decision.
Key Takeaway: A critical legal showdown on corporate structure and regulations in modern dental practices.

3. Senior Patient Billing Surprises (Florida)
The Issue: Senior patients reported unexpected out-of-pocket costs at Florida dental practices affiliated with PDS Health.
The Conflict: Billing confusion and transparency issues left vulnerable patients facing unexpected financial burdens.
Key Takeaway: Heightened focus on pricing transparency and patient communication in DSO-backed clinics.

4. Paper Check Out-of-Network Payments (Aetna)
The Issue: Aetna decided to phase out paper checks for out-of-network dental providers.
The Conflict: The American Dental Association (ADA) urges Aetna to reverse the rule, citing potential conflicts with state payment choice statutes.
Key Takeaway: Insurer payment digitization vs. regulatory compliance and provider choice.

5. Medicaid Dental Coverage Cap (Massachusetts)
The Issue: Massachusetts state legislators approved a new budget that increases the cap on Medicaid dental services higher than initially proposed.
The Conflict: Pushes state budget limits while addressing access to care for low-income populations.
Key Takeaway: Legislative wins for expanding Medicaid dental coverage amidst fiscal debates.
