3 Gentle Truths From a Pediatric Dentist

We love partnering with parents to keep little smiles healthy! To help clear up some common dental misconceptions, here are three honest insights we wish more families knew:

• Watering down juice doesn’t protect against cavities. While “cutting” juice with water feels like a healthier choice, the bacteria in the mouth don’t care about dilution. To them, sugar is sugar—and even a small amount gives them the fuel they need to create cavity-causing acid.

• Kids still need help brushing until they are 7 or 8. Effective brushing requires a lot of fine motor skills. A great rule of thumb: if your child can’t neatly color inside the lines or tie their own shoes yet, they still need an adult to do a final brush-through to make sure every spot is clean!

• Baby teeth are incredibly important. They aren’t just “temporary” placeholders. Untreated cavities in baby teeth can lead to painful infections, cause spacing issues for adult teeth, and even damage the permanent teeth growing directly beneath them.

Want the secret to a perfect dental checkup straight from a pro? ☁️💙 Eight-year-old Lena is sharing her foolproof routine to empower other kids.

Brush for 2 minutes, two times a day.
Scrape that tongue to keep things fresh!
Use a good mouthwash at night.

Enjoy the checkup: The team will clean your teeth and apply a quick fluoride varnish to keep cavities away.

Pack a stuffy: The dentist isn’t scary, but holding a stuffed animal helps you feel super safe.

Hearing a patient like Lena excitedly share her own routine proves that establishing a dental “health home” early on creates confident, empowered kids. From the first tooth to graduation, we’re with you every step of the way.

The Back-to-School Sports Dental Playbook 🏆⚽

As we gear up for a new school year, fall sports schedules are quickly filling up! Whether your child is hitting the turf, the court, or the track, keeping their smile safe is just as important as keeping them in the game.

Here is your quick 3-step playbook for a safe, healthy, and injury-free sports season:

1. Complete the Uniform with a Mouthguard 🛡️
Helmet? Check. Shin guards? Check. Mouthguard? 🦷 Protect their smile by making a mouthguard a non-negotiable part of their gear. Mouthguards cover the upper teeth and shield the lips, tongue, face, and jaw from impact in any sport they play.

2. Swap "Sports Drinks" for Water on the Sidelines 💧
Hydration is key for peak performance, but many commercial sports drinks are packed with added sugars and high acidity. When sugar mixes with the natural bacteria in the mouth, it creates an acid that weakens tooth enamel. Water is always the best choice to keep them hydrated and cavity-free!

3. Keep Up the "Defense" at Home 🪥
A strong defense at home makes for a safer game on the field. Sticking to a consistent brushing, flossing, and rinsing routine keeps tooth enamel strong and healthy. Structurally strong teeth are actually much more resilient and less prone to severe damage if an unexpected sports injury does happen.

Let's keep those smiles safe and bright all season long!
