For this month’s Hygiene Highlight, we’re hearing from our hygienist, Laura Avery! In honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Laura is sharing her personal story and an important message about awareness, compassion, and hope.
Thank you, Laura, for using your voice to shine a light on such an important topic! 💜
My name is Laura Avery, and I have been a dental hygienist at Tifton Regional Dental Group for the past 19 years. Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of caring for so many wonderful people and being a part of their lives in ways that go far beyond their dental health.
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and this cause is especially near and dear to my heart because I have personally experienced domestic violence. I also know so many strong, courageous, and wonderful people whose lives have been touched by it.
One of the most important things I want people to understand is that domestic violence can happen to anyone. It does not discriminate based on age, gender, background, profession, or social status. Sometimes the person experiencing it may be someone we know, work with, care for, or see every day—and we may have no idea what they are going through.
As a dental hygienist, I believe we are in a unique position to notice changes, listen without judgment, and offer support when someone may need it. Awareness, compassion, and simply letting someone know that they are not alone can make a difference.
I am sharing my story because I believe there is strength in speaking up, there is courage in asking for help, and there is hope beyond domestic violence. No one deserves to live in fear, and no one should have to face it alone.
