Ever been lying back in the chair while your hygienist calls out numbers? That’s us measuring the space between your gum and your tooth, six spots on every tooth.
1 to 3 millimeters is healthy. 4 means we’re keeping an eye on it. 5 and up means bacteria have somewhere to live that your toothbrush can’t reach, and that bone doesn’t come back.
Here’s the part most people don’t know: early gum disease usually doesn’t hurt. Blood in the sink when you brush is often the only sign, and it’s easy to blame on brushing too hard.
September is Gum Care Month. If it’s been more than six months, book the cleaning.

Happy National Dog Day from Valley View Dental! 🐾

Dr. Prince is always happy to talk about your pets and would love to see their pictures at your next visit. In fact, every member of our clinical team has a dog, so it is safe to say we are a practice full of dog lovers.

Pictured are a few of our patients’ sweet dogs who have visited the office, Dr. Prince’s golden retriever Luna, our official Pawffice Manager, and Dr. Prince as a toddler with her beloved childhood best friend, Leo. Her love for dogs started early! 💛

Tell us about your dog in the comments, or share a picture with us at your next appointment.

Back in the classroom today with The Trust and Metro Denver Dental Society Metro Denver Dental Society . Sedation is one of those things where the training never really stops, and I would rather keep it sharp than assume I remember everything from the last go around.

Here is the part that actually matters to you. If the dental chair makes your stomach drop, sedation is not the same thing as being knocked out. You stay awake and aware, just calm enough to get through the appointment without white knuckling it.

If you have been putting off a visit because of nerves, that is worth a conversation. Call us at 303-254-4484.

Two things we can do for early decay that don’t involve a needle or a handpiece.
Curodont is a peptide solution. It soaks into enamel that has started to break down and gives new mineral a scaffold to rebuild on. We use it most for white spots after braces and for early lesions on an x-ray that haven’t cavitated yet. Ten minutes in the chair, nothing to numb.
SDF is silver diamine fluoride. A drop on the tooth stops an active cavity from getting bigger and kills the bacteria behind it. One minute per tooth. The tradeoff is color: whatever is decayed turns black and stays that way. That’s an easy yes on a back baby molar and a much longer conversation on a front tooth.
Neither one fills a hole. If the tooth is already broken down, you still need a restoration. But when we catch it early, sometimes we get to skip that part.
If you have a kid who panics at the sound of a drill, bring this up at your next visit and we’ll tell you whether it’s an option.

When Dr. Prince says she grew up in dentistry, she’s not exaggerating 😂 Her dad is a dentist, so her childhood happened in his clinic. Family vacations usually came with a dental conference attached, lectures included. It’s been part of her life for as long as she can remember. 🦷

With all these 100° days, staying hydrated isn’t just good for your body—it’s good for your smile, too. 💧

Did you know one of the biggest risk factors for cavities isn’t sugar? It’s dry mouth.

Saliva is your mouth’s natural defense system. It helps wash away bacteria, neutralize acids, and protect your teeth. When your mouth stays dry, your risk of cavities, bad breath, and gum disease increases.

Many common medications can reduce saliva production, including:
• Antidepressants
• Allergy medications (antihistamines)
• Blood pressure medications
• ADHD medications
• Sleep aids

If your mouth often feels dry, don’t ignore it. Drink water throughout the day, chew sugar-free xylitol gum if appropriate, avoid sipping sugary drinks, and let your dentist know which medications you’re taking. Sometimes a few simple changes can make a big difference in protecting your smile.

This summer, keep your water bottle close. Your teeth will thank you.

Still putting off that tooth replacement? Your insurance might not wait with you.

Starting 2027 some Delta Dental plans include a “12-month rule,” which may affect coverage for replacing crowns or other major dental work within a year, even if the restoration fails due to circumstances beyond your control. Coverage depends on your specific plan, and not every Delta policy includes the same limitations.

The most important takeaway? Dental insurance is a benefit, not a treatment plan.

If you’re told something isn’t covered, it doesn’t always mean it isn’t necessary. Your oral health should be guided by what’s clinically best for you and not just what your insurance company chooses to reimburse.

If you ever have questions about your benefits or a treatment recommendation, we’re happy to help you understand your options and advocate for your care.

Or skip insurance altogether and join our in-house plan.

Once baby teeth sit side by side, a toothbrush can’t reach the space between them, and that’s exactly where cavities like to start. Floss picks are the easiest way in for tiny mouths. Let your kiddo hold it and practice themselves, then do a quick follow-up pass so every spot actually gets cleaned.

And yes, baby teeth are worth the effort. They hold space for the adult teeth coming in behind them, so healthy habits now pay off for years.

Bring your flossing questions to your next visit. We love this stuff.
