Happy National Coming Out Day. LGBTQ+ dental care starts at the front desk, and these 4 tips can make your dental office more welcoming.

A patient tells his dentist that his spouse will call to confirm his next appointments. The dentist says his wife can call anytime. He has been married to his husband for over ten years.

Gay, le***an, and bisexual people are more likely to rate their oral health as poor and less likely to have a regular dental home, partly because it is hard to find an office that feels safe.

I wrote this article for the Metro Denver Dental Society a few years ago, and I’m sharing it again today. Swipe for the main points: asking for names and pronouns, updating health history forms, understanding how hormone therapy affects oral health, and building a team that speaks up.

Erika and Dr. Prince spent today at the Bioclear course learning how to close those stubborn gaps near the gumline. Black triangles show up after gum recession, clear aligners, a traumatic bite, loss of collagen or years of wear. A lot of patients assume they just have to live with them. Perks of the job is that you can treat your own muscle pain with Botox!
Botox and dental work both on your calendar? Timing matters.
If you get Botox first, give it 2 weeks before crowns, root canals, or implants. That lets the toxin settle where it should and gives the area time to heal.
If the dental work comes first, wait 1 to 2 weeks after fillings, crowns, or root canals before your next injection. After oral surgery or implant placement, make it 2 to 4 weeks.
Filler needs a little more room. Plan on 2 to 4 weeks on either side, because opening wide and the pressure and vibration of dental work can move fresh product.

That dark space between the two front teeth has a name. We call it a black triangle.
It shows up when decay works its way into the spot where two teeth touch each other. The contact between them opens up, food starts packing in, and the shadow behind it reads as a gap even from across a room.
This patient had it on both upper front teeth. We cleaned out the decay, rebuilt the contact point with tooth colored composite, and shaped it until the two teeth met again. No crowns, no cutting down healthy tooth.

Ever been lying back in the chair while your hygienist calls out numbers? That’s us measuring the space between your gum and your tooth, six spots on every tooth.
1 to 3 millimeters is healthy. 4 means we’re keeping an eye on it. 5 and up means bacteria have somewhere to live that your toothbrush can’t reach, and that bone doesn’t come back.
Here’s the part most people don’t know: early gum disease usually doesn’t hurt. Blood in the sink when you brush is often the only sign, and it’s easy to blame on brushing too hard.
September is Gum Care Month. If it’s been more than six months, book the cleaning.

Dr. Prince is always happy to talk about your pets and would love to see their pictures at your next visit. In fact, every member of our clinical team has a dog, so it is safe to say we are a practice full of dog lovers.
