Have you heard of MRONJ. or BRONJ?
Women over the age of 50 have the greatest risk of developing osteoporosis.
Bisphosphonates like Fosamax® is used most commonly in the treatment of osteoporosis. Other Bisphosphonates prescribed are boniva, and denosumab ( prolia) and others. Patients receiving these (especially iv)are more at risk of developing osteonecrosis (bone death) of the jaw, and certain dental treatments may not be recommended. Bisphosphonates remain in the bone for years and reduce the osteoclastic activity. They get deposited on the hydroxyapatite. Also when the osteocytes are exposed to the bisphosphonates, they can cause micro necrosis especially when u have a dental infection.
Stopping a bisphosphonate for 3 months prior to a procedure seems to reduce the incidence of osteoradionecrosis.
However, patients who developed osteonecrosis had other factors, including chemotherapy, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and steroid therapy. Some of these conditions are risk factors for Medicine related radionecrosis.(MRONJ)Bisphosphonates — such as alendronate (Fosamax, Binosto), risedronate (Actonel, Atelvia), ibandronate (Boniva) and zoledronic acid (Reclast, Zometa) — and denosumab (Prolia, Xgeva) have been linked to osteonecrosis of the jaw. Severe symptoms include infection in your jaw bone. If this happens, it may take a long time for you to heal after dental surgery or you may not heal at all. And it is very unsightly and very painful. Severe cases might require surgery.
Swipe over to see the chart.
So to all my lovely ladies if you are on any of these medications esp Bisphosphonates avoid invasive dental work . And inform your dentist on time of dental exams about this fact .
