Even a consistent brushing routine needs a brush that’s in good shape. The American Dental Association recommends a new toothbrush about every 3–4 months, with an earlier swap if the bristles become frayed.

If you've ever listened to your hygienist call out numbers while checking your gums with a small probe, you may have wondered what they mean.

The probe measures the depth of the space between your tooth and gum, from the gumline to the bottom of that space. Each number is a measurement in millimeters.

• 1–3 mm: Usually within the healthy range.
• 4 mm or more: A deeper space that warrants a closer look. Deeper pockets can be a sign of gum disease and allow bacteria to collect beneath the gumline.

Depth alone doesn't tell the whole story. Your dental team also evaluates bleeding, gum recession, and bone support to understand your gum health and recommend appropriate care.
