Toothaches are never fun, particularly for little kids who might not know whatโ€™s happening. ๐Ÿ˜• They can be caused by a variety of things and are usually worth a visit to the dentist, especially if itโ€™s still hurting after a couple of days, but what can parents do when a toothache comes during the holidays or after hours?

For children, a toothache could simply be teething from a new baby tooth or adult tooth. This is a normal part of development. โ˜บ๏ธ Otherwise, the most common reason for initial tooth pain is decay, but it can also happen with gum disease, dental abscess, inflamed pulp, or a cracked tooth. Impacted teeth can be painful as well, and tooth sensitivity can be very uncomfortable.

Itโ€™s usually best to bring a child with a toothache to the dentist. If that isnโ€™t possible at first, there are a few things that can help manage their discomfort until then:

1. Rinsing and spitting with warm saltwater will reduce inflammation.
2. Applying a cold compress to their cheek near where itโ€™s sore.
3. Giving them childrenโ€™s over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medication.

How to prevent future toothaches? Brush and floss daily and schedule regular dental visits! ๐Ÿ‘

DIABETES, WHETHER TYPE 1, 2, or even gestational, makes it more difficult to maintain good dental health โ€” and vice-versa. Over 20% of diabetics develop a form of gum disease. Untreated gum disease can take a toll on overall health and even become life-threatening if the bacteria reach the bloodstream. ๐Ÿ˜Ÿ

Gum disease symptoms to watch for include chronic bad breath, the gums becoming swollen, red, and prone to bleeding, receding gums, and loosening of the teeth. Diabetes increases the risk of other problems such as slower healing, worse and more frequent infections, dry mouth, enlarged salivary glands, fungal infections, and burning mouth syndrome.

No matter whatโ€™s causing it, gum disease can present a challenge for orthodontic treatment. Parents of kids with type 1 diabetes should take extra care to help them keep their diabetes under control and to promote good oral health. ๐Ÿ˜€ Then, if they need braces, their treatment will be able to go forward and they will be able to enjoy the benefits of properly aligned teeth.

It is perfectly possible to reach and maintain good oral health while diabetic. Good oral hygiene habits like daily flossing, twice-daily brushing with fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush, and regular dental checkups are all essential. So is being careful with sugar intake! ๐Ÿ‘
