August 6th is National Fresh Breath Day! Here are three common mistakes that may be holding you back from peak minty magic:
#1: Using the wrong mouthwash , or even worse, using moutwash as a substitute for brushing. Avoid mouthwash that claims to kill 99.99% of bacteria, because some bacteria are actually beneficial for our oral health - specifically the kind that outcompete cavity-causing bacterias. Look for mouthwash that supports your oral microbiome, and use it in tandem with your regular brushing routine.
#2: Skipping meals can make bad breath worse. Not eating increases stress and decreases saliva production, both of which contribute to excess bacteria present in the mouth. These bacteria are what we associate with the sulfur-sceneted odors common with hallatosis (bad breath).
#3: Tongue brushing/scraping is vital for fresh breath. Most of us have our tooth brushing routine down, but how many remember to scrub the tongue as well? Plenty of food and drink residue remain in the tiny bumps and valleys of our tastebuds, and without regular cleaning, bacteria buildup there can lead to bad breath. Adding a tongue scraper to your brushing routine is an easy fix.
BONUS #4: Regular cleanings at your local Coast Dental can help your smile (and breath) be the best it can be! Schedule today.
