Great first experience for 1st year UF Prosthodontic residents this week in the operating room during two complex surgical and maxillofacial prosthodontic cases.

I also had the opportunity to share live virtual surgical planning concepts with the entire Prosthodontics resident team, demonstrating how digital planning can be integrated into the treatment of complex patients and advanced surgical reconstruction.

Since 2015, we have volunteered with Dental Lifeline Network (DLN) Florida, a national nonprofit that connects vulnerable individuals with essential dental care they otherwise could not access. DLN focuses on improving the oral and overall health of elderly, permanently disabled, and medically fragile individuals by linking them with volunteer dentists and dental laboratories who donate their time and services.

Through the Donated Dental Services (DDS) program, we help provide free, comprehensive dental care to patients in need. The program serves individuals facing significant barriers to treatment, including those requiring medically necessary dental work as part of critical care such as organ transplants, cancer treatment, or other major medical procedures, ensuring they are not left without essential oral health support.

We collaborate with a network of volunteer dental professionals who provide care in their private practices, allowing patients to be treated in a familiar, respectful clinical setting while maintaining high standards of quality and dignity. Most comprehensive dental services are covered, while emergency-only and cosmetic procedures are generally excluded.

We remain committed to supporting DLN’s mission and helping connect individuals with needed care. Those who may qualify are encouraged to apply through the Dental Lifeline Network Help Page, and we are always available to help guide individuals to local resources or confirm program availability in their area.

Using a fully digital workflow, including intraoral scanning, photogrammetry, cone beam CT imaging, and precise CAD CAM data merging, our multidisciplinary team was able to restore both function and quality of life for this remarkable young 17-year-old patient following treatment for head and neck cancer.

Through the combined expertise of Dr. William Reschly, Head and Neck/Oncologic Reconstructive Microvascular Surgeon; Dr. C. Edgar Dávila, Maxillofacial Prosthodontist; and Dr. Alexandra Dávila, Prosthodontist, we planned and executed a comprehensive digital reconstruction that allowed us to achieve highly predictable functional and esthetic outcomes.

Today, the patient is doing exceptionally well. He has regained oral function, continues to have excellent follow-up results, is attending college, and is living a normal, active life despite the tremendous challenges he faced after cancer treatment.

Cases like this remind us why we do what we do. Restoring function, confidence, and hope through teamwork and advanced digital technology is truly one of the greatest rewards in our profession. At four months postoperatively, this patient with maxillary osteoradionecrosis secondary to extensive radiation therapy is demonstrating excellent healing following Jaw-in-a-Day free flap reconstruction of the maxilla.

At this follow-up visit, the patient shows favorable healing of the fibula free flap reconstruction with immediate dental implants and immediate implant-supported prosthesis. Adequate healing of the palatal defect and successful removal of necrotic bone associated with osteoradionecrosis.

This case highlights the power of a true interdisciplinary approach in complex maxillary reconstruction, integrating head and neck microvascular surgery, maxillofacial prosthodontics, and implant rehabilitation to restore function and quality of life. It is always a privilege to share time and knowledge with such dedicated faculty and prosthodontic residents committed to excellence in patient care.

Even more special was ending the day and weekend enjoying quality family time with my wife, Martha, and my daughter Vanessa. Grateful for the balance between teaching, surgery, and family.

Fantastic and productive last Friday teaching day at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Dentistry as part of the PostGraduate Prosthodontic Training Program.

The day included surgical placement of implants, photogrammetry with ICAM, uncovering of implants, and multiple prosthetic procedures. It was a very productive Friday, and I truly enjoyed working with the residents and collaborating closely with the faculty.
