Gums that have been bleeding for months are not asking for a softer brush.

By then the bacteria sit in pockets between the gum and the root, 4 to 6 millimeters deep, and a brush stops at 3. The CDC estimates that 47.2% of adults over 30 have some form of gum disease, and most of them feel nothing until a tooth loosens.

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine estimates more than 30 million American adults have it and about 80% have never been diagnosed.

It starts as a white spot where acid pulled minerals out of the enamel, and at that point fluoride and a cleaner routine can put them back. Then it breaks the enamel, then it reaches the softer dentin and speeds up. The CDC counts about 1 in 4 American adults between 20 and 64 with an untreated cavity.

Three, three, four, two, five. If you have ever heard that during a cleaning, it was about you.

The hygienist runs a thin probe between tooth and gum at six points per tooth and reads the pocket depth in millimeters. The American Academy of Periodontology reads 1 to 3 as healthy, 4 as inflammation that a cleaning still reverses, and 5 or more as bone already lost.

A 5 feels identical to a 2, which is why people are surprised at the visit where the word "deep cleaning" shows up. Knowing your numbers is the difference between reversing and repairing.

The whitening hack all over your feed scrubs the enamel, and the shade underneath stays the same.

Charcoal is abrasive and only reaches surface stains. Purple paste tints the surface for a few hours and rinses off. A 2017 review in the Journal of the American Dental Association found too little evidence that charcoal toothpastes whiten teeth or are safe for daily use.
