Would you trust this ad? βπ¦·
Larry, the owner of Ragged Coffee Co., and I were talking recently about false marketing: the bold health claims companies make that they can't actually back up. So we made this ad as an example of exactly that.
Here's the truth: coffee does not prevent tooth erosion. Even "low-acid" coffee is still acidic, and no coffee is going to protect your enamel. If you see a product promising health benefits that sound too good to be true, be skeptical and ask what evidence supports the claim.
So why am I holding a bag of Ragged? Because I genuinely like it:
β
It's fresh, usually roasted within the last couple of days
β
It's a locally owned Tampa Bay business
β
They carry a great variety of coffees from all over the world
Dental pearls for coffee lovers π¦·β¨
Coffee doesn't need to be your smile's enemy. A few habits go a long way against staining and enamel wear:
π§ Drink water after your coffee. A quick sip or swish rinses away the pigments and acids before they settle in.
π₯€ Use a straw for iced coffee. It keeps the coffee from washing over the front surfaces of your teeth.
β±οΈ Don't sip all day. Enjoying your cup in one sitting is easier on enamel than slowly sipping for hours, which keeps your mouth acidic longer.
πͺ₯ Wait about 30 minutes before brushing. Acid temporarily softens enamel, and brushing right away can wear it down.
π¬ Go easy on the sugar and syrups. Sugar feeds the bacteria that cause cavities.
π Keep up with your cleanings. Professional cleanings remove surface stains that build up over time.
Enjoy your coffee, support local, and always question the marketing! β
