Some questions answered regarding fluoride:
*Is fluoride safe?= Fluoride is safe at the levels used in dentistry. The benefit is topical (on the tooth surface), not from swallowing it.
*Do I really need fluoridated water if I already brush?= Brushing with fluoride toothpaste gives you the main benefit. Fluoridated water mainly helps at the community level, especially where not everyone brushes regularly or receives dental care.
*Is bottled water safer than tap water?= Most bottled waters don't have added fluoride. That means they're not harmful, but they also don't give the same cavity protection as fluoridated tap water.
*Why do some countries ban fluoride?= No countries ban the use of fluoride. Some have simply decided to forgo adding it to their water. They still use fluoride, just through different delivery methods, like toothpastes, rinses, and varnishes.
*Isn't fluoride a neurotoxin?= That claim comes from very high levels of swallowed fluoride. At those levels, risks exist. The small topical amounts on toothpaste, rinses, and treatments are safe and effective.
*Is fluoride toxic?= Fluoride on the surface of your teeth and inside of your mouth is where it really counts, and it is challenging to overdo. That's why toothpaste, rinses, and treatments are safe and work so well. Swallowing fluoride adds little extra benefit, and too much swallowed fluoride may cause problems, especially in kids.
*If my child swallows toothpaste, isn't that dangerous?= Too much swallowed paste can cause fluorosis in developing teeth. That's why children under six should use a smear (rice-sized) amount and always spit, never swallow.
*Why not just avoid fluoride completely?= Without fluoride, teeth are more vulnerable to caries. Used topically and correctly, fluoride is one of the safest and most effective ways to prevent dental decay.
