What actually causes gum disease?

It often starts with tartar buildup along the gumline, which acts like a sliver stuck in the skin, irritating the tissue until it leads to infection. Early signs include bleeding gums, pain when brushing or flossing, and red, swollen tissue.

The best way to prevent it is simple: brush twice a day, floss daily, and consider adding a water flosser to your routine. But since everyone's mouth is different, your cleaning frequency and treatment plan should be customized by your dental team!

So, we brought in Dr. Greg Plancich's dogs, Franny and Dalton, to show you how to care for their teeth.

Here are the steps:
1. Introduce the toothpaste first.
2. Let them get a sniff.
3. Brush gently along the gums and teeth, a little at a time.

Some mouthwashes might be doing too much.

Hereā€™s why:
Older mouthwashes like Listerine tend to wipe out all the bacteria in your mouth, including the good bacteria your mouth actually needs.
But newer research is shifting toward supporting a healthier oral microbiome without disrupting everything else.
