We recently hosted an engaging upper-extremity prosthetics in-service for occupational therapists, focused on deepening understanding through both education and hands-on experience. While the group was intentionally small, the session was highly interactive and very well received by attendees.
The in-service combined detailed written handouts with practical demonstrations and opportunities for participation. OTs had the opportunity to try on upper-extremity prosthetic devices themselves while practicing donning and doffing techniques. Multiple prosthetic options were showcased, including both body-powered and myoelectric devices, giving attendees a broader understanding of the technologies available to patients.
One of the highlights of the session was the hands-on myoelectric demonstration, where participants were connected to electrodes to test how muscle signals activate the prosthetic device. The interactive format helped bring the technology to life and encouraged meaningful discussion throughout the event. Attendees shared that they plan to bring the information back to their therapy teams to increase awareness and understanding of upper-extremity prosthetics within their organizations.
