Your support helps athletes like Thomas get back in the game.

As a left below-elbow amputee, Thomas once felt limited at the plate. Then, with the help of a custom baseball prosthetic from Syracuse Prosthetic Orthotic Center and support from the Challenged Champions Fund, everything changed.

“I was swinging a baseball bat and golf club like any other person could.”

The first time Thomas connected with the ball and sent it into the outfield, it meant far more than a base hit. It was a moment of confidence, belonging, and possibility.

This year’s Challenged Champions Golf Tournament helps make stories like Thomas’s possible.

“Losing my foot was an easy decision.”

Not because the journey was easy, but because the choice had become clear: keep living with pain, or choose a path forward without it.

Before making that decision, Keith was there. He came to the meeting, talked through what to expect, and helped make sure there was a plan for what came next.

When you’re facing a life-changing decision, having someone in your corner who understands the road ahead can make all the difference.

"It's worth the drive."

Thankful for patients willing to travel more than an hour every 4, 6 or 8 weeks for appointments at SPOC.

Why?

Because finding the right prosthetic fit isn't just about convenience. It's about working with a team that listens, makes adjustments, answers questions, and stays with you throughout the journey.

We're grateful for the trust our patients place in us and proud to help people from across Central New York get back to the life they love.

A positive attitude can make all the difference.

The challenges may be real, and the path may not always be easy, but the way you approach each day can change everything.

At SPOC, we’re continually inspired by patients who choose to focus on what they can do, keep moving forward, and make the most of every opportunity.

A prosthesis is a tool. The determination, perspective, and positive attitude behind it? That’s where the real difference is made.

There’s something powerful about connecting with someone who truly understands your journey.

At SPOC, we’re building a stronger peer support community to connect individuals experiencing limb loss with others who have been there—offering encouragement, understanding, and real-life perspective.

Every step forward tells a story of determination. After receiving her below-knee prosthesis on June 25, our patient began the next chapter of her recovery. While healing from surgery, she has been living in a skilled nursing facility, where she and her husband have remained committed to the process every step of the way.

Even after formal therapy ended, they continued working together to build strength and prepare for prosthetic fitting and training. Now, with the added support of her new prosthesis, she's making meaningful progress toward her goal of returning home to her husband in the near future.

We're honored to be part of her journey and look forward to cheering her on with every milestone.

Peer support can make a powerful difference after limb loss. Sometimes, the most meaningful encouragement comes from someone who truly understands what the journey looks and feels like.

Our goal is simple: create meaningful connections so no one has to navigate the journey without support, encouragement, and someone who’s been there.

Learn more about the peer support community we’re building at SPOC:

No two limb loss journeys are exactly the same. Whether someone is adjusting to life after an amputation, recovering from trauma, managing a congenital limb difference, or navigating a new prosthesis, each person's experience comes with unique challenges. While clinical care is essential, one of th

Navigating a prosthetic journey can feel overwhelming, especially when you're trying to keep track of appointments, ask the right questions, and understand your next steps.

For this patient, having Bridget, our Patient Support Specialist, by his side made all the difference.

"She goes to all of your appointments with you. There's no phone tag. She goes right in the exam room with you, talks to the doctor, and talks to me. I felt really comfortable having someone along for the trip."

Having someone in your corner means you never have to navigate the process alone. Sometimes the best support isn't just the care you receive. It's knowing someone is there with you every step of the way.
