Most people don’t expect their dentist to ask about their energy levels.
But when someone tells me they’re exhausted all the time, relying on more and more coffee, waking up tired, or struggling with daytime fatigue, I pay attention.
Why?
Because we’re not just looking for cavities.
As part of a comprehensive exam, we evaluate the airway and look for signs and symptoms in the mouth that may be associated with sleep-disordered breathing and other health concerns.
We don’t diagnose sleep apnea. But we can often identify risk factors, recognize patterns, and help determine when a referral for a sleep evaluation may be appropriate.
For this patient, that conversation led to answers.
After being diagnosed and treated for sleep apnea, his energy improved, he stopped relying on coffee to get through the day, and he felt like himself again.
Too many people assume fatigue is just part of getting older.
It isn’t always.
Sometimes your body is trying to tell you something.
Have you noticed yourself needing more coffee, waking up tired, or feeling low on energy throughout the day?
Let me know in the comments.
