Early Detection Saves Lives

In honor of Oral Cancer Awareness Month, Dr. Leslie Davis will be offering free oral cancer screenings April 4th through April 28th, 2022 in his Sun City West office.

Oral cancer is not a rare disease. Every hour, 24-hours-a-day, 365-days-a-year, someone dies of oral or oropharyngeal cancer (cancer of the mouth and upper throat). This year an estimated 54,0001 new cases of oral cancer will be diagnosed. Of those individuals, 43 percent will not survive longer than five years, and many who do survive to suffer long-term problems, such as severe facial disfigurement or difficulties with eating and speaking. The death rate associated with oral and oropharyngeal cancers remains particularly high because the cancers routinely are discovered late in their development. Yet, if oral cancer is detected and treated early, treatment-related health problems are reduced and survival rates may increase.

The good news is that it can often be found early in its development, through a simple, painless, and quick screening.

Who should get screened?

Every adult. Oral cancer can often be caught early, even as a pre-cancer. With early detection, survival rates are high and the side effects are from treatment are at their lowest. Like other screenings you engage in such as cervical, skin, prostate, colon and breast examinations, oral cancer screenings are an effective means of finding cancer at its early, highly curable stages. Make them part of your annual health check-ups.

Early Indicators:
Red and/or white discolorations of the soft tissues of the mouth.
Any sore which does not heal within 14 days.
Hoarseness which lasts for a prolonged period of time.

Advanced Indicators:
A sensation that something is stuck in you throat.
Numbness in the oral region.
Difficulty in moving the jaw or tongue.
Difficulty in swallowing.
Ear pain which occurs on one side only.
A sore under a denture, which even after adjustment of the denture, still does not heal.
A lump or thickening which develops in the mouth or on the neck.

An oral cancer screening should be conducted every year, so take advantage of this FREE OFFER and get screened today. Call 623-584-0664 and speak with Lisa or Jana to make an appointment for your complimentary screening.

Our office is open!

We are continuing to fine-tune our office scheduling procedures so that there will be minimal overlap of patients or waiting time prior to being seated in the treatment rooms.

In addition to the comprehensive sterilization protocols that we have always followed, you will notice that we will all now be wearing PPE gowns, and those of us "in the back" who have actual patient contact will also be wearing surgical caps—saves on hair appointments and also, no more bad hair days!

We have also made a huge effort to clear countertops and shelves of unnecessary clutter to more easily facilitate sterilization of the treatment rooms between patients. Yes, the office now looks a little starker, emptier, and less welcoming, but all with good intentions and for the safety and well-being of all our patients.
