Have you ever taken your car to the mechanic and were told that you needed a repair that you knew very little about, but you felt like you had no choice but to just trust them? After all, THEY are the mechanic…right? It's an anxious feeling that most of us have experienced.

You may have noticed that very same thing often happens when you go to the dentist! You’re told that you need something (that costs a lot), but you aren’t exactly sure WHY you need it, or even IF you really DO need it! You’re put in the uncomfortable position of having to just TRUST that the doctor has your best interest at heart. Well, WE just don’t think it’s right or fair to do that to our patients!

At Butterfield Family and Cosmetic Dentistry
there is no question that our patients are highly educated when it comes to the health of their teeth and their treatment options. Dr. Butterfield is a “patient-educator” dentist. What we mean by this, is that he absolutely loves his field, and wants YOU to KNOW and SEE and UNDERSTAND EXACTLY what is going on in your mouth (unless of course, you request otherwise). We do this through the use of an HD intra-oral camera; and we do this at NO extra charge to our patients.

Our patients can literally see what he sees. Dr. Butterfield then takes time to explain what you are seeing on the monitor, so that you can make educated decisions for yourself, rather than just being told what you need. Dr. Butterfield is honest, and won’t try to sell you something you don’t need. He will present ALL options to you, recognizing that every patient is an individual, with different needs, wants, and budgets. He keeps you involved in the process, so you can be confident that you’re making the right decisions for your own dental health.

It can be overwhelming to look under the hood of your car (or inside your mouth) if you don't know what you're looking for. We believe that when you know the what, where's and why's of your treatment plan, you are much better off. We keep YOU in the driver’s seat, every step of the way!

A little life update from our Practice Manager, Jessica.

After being away from the office for a lengthy amount of time, I’m finally making my way back to my normal hours and availability, and I wanted to take a moment to give our patients an explanation about where I’ve been. Most importantly, I want to say thank you for being so patient and understanding.

Back in April, I suffered a severe traumatic brain injury. The resulting damage and concussion was serious enough that after a four day hospital stay, my care needed to be transferred to UVA. It took several months of treatment and recovery. I’m dealing with what could be permanent damage to my fourth and fifth cranial nerves, but time will tell. After all of this, I have finally been medically cleared to return to work with restrictions.

While I was dealing with my TBI recovery, I also received another diagnosis that came as a complete shock to me. I was diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma and needed surgery to remove it. Due to it being on my face, I had to wait for the availability of a plastic surgeon. Thankfully, I can say that I have now beaten cancer for the SECOND time! Four years ago, I fought and beat melanoma, and I’m incredibly grateful to be on the other side of it again. You can see the scar from my most recent surgery on my forehead in this photo, and honestly, I’m proud of what it represents.

On top of all of that, I’m a single mom, and my son recently made the big transition from Montessori to public school. That came with its own adjustments, including the lovely assortment of germs that come home from school. Strep throat was the icing on the cake for these past few months.

It has been a lot.

As I transition back into my normal schedule, I may still be a little slower responding to messages and emails than I was before. If you have reached out to me in the past and haven’t received a response, please don’t hesitate to send me another email at [email protected]. I promise I’m not ignoring you. Sometimes life has simply gotten ahead of me.

I also want to take a moment to publicly thank Dr. Butterfield and his wife, Cindi, for their incredible support, patience, and understanding throughout all of this. Being without a Practice Manager for this long undoubtedly had an impact on the practice, and I will never forget how supportive they were while I focused on getting healthy enough to come back.

And to our patients, families, and the entire Butterfield Dentistry team: thank you. Truly. Thank you for your patience, your understanding, your kind messages, and for giving me the time I needed to heal.

I’m so happy to finally be getting back to the office, back to our team, and back to doing what I love.
