Does my child really need a palatal expander? And why does timing matter?
A palatal expander does more than move teeth—it helps widen a narrow upper jaw while your child is still growing.
As children mature through puberty, the mid-palatal suture becomes more resistant to expansion. That’s why, when expansion is truly needed, we may recommend treating before or around the pubertal growth spurt rather than simply waiting until all the permanent teeth are in.
We may consider early expansion for: • A narrow upper jaw
• Crossbites
• Significant crowding
• Not enough room for permanent teeth to erupt properly
Does every child need Phase 1 orthodontic treatment? Absolutely not. Sometimes we treat, and sometimes we watch and wait.
The key is knowing the difference.
