Can Your Dentist Notice Signs of a Sleep Problem?
Your dentist might notice clues about your sleep before YOU do!
You might think your dental exam is just about checking for cavities, but at McCreight Progressive Dentistry, we're looking at a much bigger picture.
Your mouth, jaw, and surrounding anatomy can sometimes reveal clues about what may be happening while you're sleeping.
🔍 Here's what we're looking for:
💧 Dry Mouth: Waking up with a dry mouth may be related to mouth breathing during sleep. Chronic dryness can also increase your risk of cavities and gum problems.
😬 Grinding & Clenching: Flattened, worn, or chipped teeth may indicate nighttime grinding. While grinding doesn't automatically mean you have a sleep disorder, it can sometimes occur alongside sleep-disordered breathing.
🫁 Anatomical Features: Certain features of your tongue, palate, tonsils, and jaw may prompt us to ask more questions about your breathing and sleep quality.
🤕 Jaw Discomfort: Morning headaches, sore jaw muscles, or facial tension may be clues that you're clenching or grinding while you sleep.
💡 Here's why this matters:
Sleep-disordered breathing, including obstructive sleep apnea, can affect much more than how rested you feel. It can also impact your cardiovascular health, energy, concentration, and overall well-being.
At MPD, we believe in connecting the dots rather than treating symptoms in isolation.
We can help identify potential warning signs and recommend appropriate screening, but diagnosing a sleep disorder requires evaluation by a qualified medical professional, often including a sleep study.
✨ Your mouth tells a story. Sometimes that story starts while you're sleeping!
