Dr. Ellis recently spoke to a local hygiene study club about the importance of and how to screen for obstructive sleep apnea in patients.

Did you know Dr. Ellis is a Diplomate through the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine? ABDSM is the leading national testing organization for dentists who treat snoring and obstructive sleep apnea with oral appliance therapy. Earning Diplomate status from the ABDSM is an honor that recognizes special competency in dental sleep medicine. Currently, only 18 dentists (four of whom are women) in the entire state of Missouri hold the Diplomate designation. Dr. Ellis is the only female who holds this designation in St. Louis.

Researchers linked obstructive sleep apnea, a condition that causes temporary pauses in breathing during sleep, with Parkinson’s disease in a new study. But the researchers did find that treating sleep apnea with a CPAP machine was associated with a reduced likelihood of developing Parkinson’s.

Those with the sleep condition were more likely to develop Parkinson’s disease. But one treatment was found to help.
