I can’t begin to tell you the number of times people have come to me with questions about lead in toothpaste. We’re talking hundreds. All of these moms are scared because a popular blogger published an article saying that toothpaste and tooth powders that are considered healthy and fluoride free are supposedly full of lead. Now some of my favorite products are actually the “Living Well With Dr Michelle” line, by Dr. Michelle Jorgensen . It was her product that was “reviewed” by this blogger. I know Michelle personally and know that she has done the math herself on her products. And she understands that her products are safe. And that was my response to anybody who asked me. But clearly pat reassurances haven’t been getting the job done.
I get that question so often about what that blogger wrote that I finally sat down and did the math myself. That being said, I did the math in a way I could understand it, because I’m not a math person. I understand parts per million, and parts per billion in a vague way, as in “ I know PPM is way more than PPB.” But because I avoid math like the plague, that was about the extent of my understanding. I was happy that way. But this question kept coming up. Now I definitely got help with it because making me understand math is a wrestling game with my brain.
It took me going round and round with ChatGPT to even get IT to understand that my brain wasn’t understanding the math in a meaningful way. And when I don’t understand something in a meaningful way, how in the world am I going to explain it?!?! So this thing was a labor of love for sure. I have a gift or explaining things in ways that makes sense to people. But in order to do that, I have to understand it first. I found a way to explain it that made sense to me. And if it makes sense to me, it usually makes sense to other people. I’m a nerd through and through, but math is on another level for me. Nonetheless, I present my “mom math” article to you.
