A small area of recession can create a much bigger periodontal concern over time.

In this case, grafting was used to build up the thin tissue around the lower front teeth and create a more substantial band of gum tissue around the area.

The difference may look subtle, but this is the kind of result that can make the area easier to maintain and give the gums more stability around the tooth.

Why might we ask about vitamin D? It might seem like an unexpected question in a periodontal office.

Vitamin D plays a role in bone health and normal immune function, two things that naturally matter when we’re evaluating the tissues and bone supporting your teeth.

That doesn’t mean one vitamin explains periodontal disease. It means we’re interested in the whole picture.

Nutrition, medical history, inflammation, lifestyle, and oral health can all give us useful context when we’re trying to understand why one patient may be experiencing problems another patient isn’t.

LANAP often gets described by what it doesn’t involve: traditional cutting and suturing.

We think it’s just as important to understand what we’re trying to accomplish with it.

For the right periodontal patient, laser-assisted treatment gives us another way to address bacteria and diseased tissue around the teeth as part of treating advanced gum disease.

The laser is a tool. The diagnosis and treatment planning still come first.

That distinction matters here. We choose treatment based on what gives your teeth a reasonable chance of being maintained rather than choosing a procedure simply because the technology sounds impressive.

The implant itself is only one part of an implant case.

Before treatment begins, we’re thinking about the final tooth. Where should it sit? How should it emerge from the gumline? What does the surrounding bone look like? Is there enough healthy tissue to support the result we want?

Planning those details ahead of time is especially important when an implant will be visible in the smile.

At Nygaard Poovey, implant planning means thinking about the surgical foundation and the final restoration from the beginning. The best time to think about the final result is before the implant ever goes in.

A little bleeding when you brush can be easy to dismiss. From a periodontal perspective, though, bleeding is information.

It can be a sign that inflammation is present around the teeth, and we want to understand why. Plaque and bacteria matter, but so can factors such as smoking, diabetes, nutrition, dry mouth, medications, and other aspects of a patient’s health.

That’s why we ask so many questions.

Periodontal care is about understanding the environment around your teeth and what may be contributing to disease over time.

Your gums have something to say about your health. We think they’re worth listening to.

Dental anxiety can make even a routine visit feel like a lot. Oral sedation can help take the edge off so you can feel more relaxed, comfortable, and able to move forward with the care you need.

We want your experience to feel as calm and manageable as possible from the moment you walk in.

If nerves have been keeping you from scheduling, talk with us about whether oral sedation may be a good option for your visit.

What does the roof of your mouth have to do with how you breathe? More than you might think.

The shape and width of the upper jaw can play a role in how the teeth fit together, how the tongue rests, and how comfortably someone breathes through their nose.

That’s one reason our approach goes beyond simply looking at gums and teeth in isolation.

At Nygaard Poovey Periodontics & Dental Implants, we consider the bigger picture: your airway, inflammation, oral health, and the structures that support your smile.

Because your mouth is connected to the rest of your body, and good care starts by understanding how all of those pieces work together.

Significant gum recession can leave the root of a natural tooth exposed and vulnerable over time.

This before-and-after shows how soft tissue grafting can help rebuild that protective gum tissue, improve coverage around the tooth, and create a healthier, more balanced gumline.

At Nygaard Poovey Periodontics & Dental Implants, this is exactly why we care so much about soft tissue grafting. When a natural tooth is healthy enough to keep, we want to do everything we reasonably can to protect it.

Your original teeth are your best teeth. And sometimes, saving them starts with rebuilding the support around them.

If you’ve been told you need periodontal surgery or that certain teeth may need to be removed, it can be worth getting a clear picture of all your options before making a final decision.

For some patients with periodontal disease, LANAP may be one treatment option to consider. This laser-assisted approach allows us to treat diseased tissue without traditional cutting or suturing while supporting our broader goal of preserving natural teeth whenever it makes sense to do so.

We’re all about saving teeth, but we also believe in being realistic about what can and can’t be predictably maintained.

Sometimes the most important first step is simply getting a second opinion and understanding what options are available before moving forward.

At Nygaard Poovey Periodontics & Dental Implants, we take the time to walk patients through what we’re seeing, what it means, and which options make the most sense for their long-term health.

When it comes to periodontal care, the goal isn’t just to treat the problem in front of us. It’s to understand the bigger picture, protect what’s healthy, and help you keep your natural teeth whenever possible.

Your original teeth are your best teeth. And knowing your options is the first step in protecting them.
