A healthy body needs a healthy mouth, and the health of your mouth is driven largely by the health of the bacterial communities living there: your oral microbiome.

One thing that can throw it out of balance? An ultra-processed diet. Here's what the vicious cycle looks like:

One of the more surprising things a dental laser can do has nothing to do with teeth. NightLase uses our Fotona laser to gently heat the soft palate, stimulating the body's own collagen to tighten the tissue that vibrates and causes snoring. A randomized, sham-controlled trial found that patients who received real NightLase treatment showed significant improvement in snoring scores, while the sham group showed none.

It's Mercury-Free Dentistry Week

You may not know this, but dental fillings have come a long way. Mercury based amalgam, the old "silver" filling, used to be the default, but that's changing fast. Most major U.S. manufacturers now make mercury free materials almost exclusively, and the FDA has recommended against amalgam for higher risk groups like pregnant women and young children. Even government programs are catching up: the Indian Health Service plans to phase out amalgam by 2027, and HHS is encouraging state Medicaid programs to follow suit. On the global stage, an international treaty has set 2034 as the target to phase out dental amalgam entirely.

A recent study using facial muscle tracking found that people instinctively mimicked a genuine smile far more than any other expression -- more than sadness, more than anger. And the more strongly someone mirrored that smile, the more trustworthy and confident they rated the person they were looking at.

Researchers think this comes down to how wired we are for social connection. A smile isn't just an expression; it triggers an automatic response in the person looking at it, shaping first impressions before a single word is exchanged.

People instinctively mimic others’ facial expressions, but new research shows we do this far more with joyful faces than with sadness or anger—and that the intensity of mimicry predicts how much we trust someone.

There's a real connection between how your bite lines up and how your neck and head sit throughout the day. A 2024 review of the research confirms it. People with one type of bite issue tended to hold their neck further back than usual, while people with a different type tended to lean their head forward more, and the pattern showed up consistently enough for researchers to call it a genuine association.

What's interesting is what happened when the bite was actually corrected, through orthodontics or jaw surgery. Neck posture shifted along with it. That tells us the bite isn't just responding to posture, or the other way around. The two seem to move together, which is part of why we look at your bite as one piece of a larger system rather than something separate from the rest of the body.
