Sleep Apnea Assoc with Diabetes and Hypertension

According to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine Obstructive Sleep Apnea is associated with an increased risk of developing diabetes and hypertension. Studies have shown that people with sleep apnea have an increased risk of developing hypertension four times more compared to those people who do not have sleep apnea. Furthermore, studies have shown that people with sleep apnea are three times more likely to get diabetes then those people that do not have sleep apnea.

Early detection and treatment of sleep apnea is warranted in order to prevent cardiometabolic disease. The association of sleep apnea with metabolic abnormalities is very common.

Emphasis should be placed on monitoring the indices of metabolic symptoms as well as lifestyle changes.

Lifestyle changes include weight control , healthy diet, regular exercise and managing stress.

THIS IS A CHRONIC DISEASE THAT INVOLVES THE REPEATED COLLAPSE OF THE UPPER AIRWAY DURING SLEEP.

Warning signs include SNORING and EXCESSIVE DAYTIME SLEEPINESS.

Did you know that Oral Appliance Therapy Should be Prescribed as a First-Line Therapy for Obstructive Sleep Apnea during the COVID-19 Pandemic that we are all facing?

Did you know that 90% of us suffer from Obstructive Sleep Apnea and do not even know it?

This is due to the following:
1. Indicated that PAP therapy has the potential to expose people, especially those people in proximity to the patient, to increased risk of transmission of COVID-19.
2. Many studies found evidence that Corona Virus can remain suspended in the air in aerosol particles.
3. There have been shortages of distilled water and other supplies need for uses of PAP machines.
4. Oral Appliances do not generate aerosols.
5. Oral Appliances can be easily disinfected by patients to kill the Corona Virus.
Patients would prefer a therapy that treats both Obstructive Sleep Apnea and does not increase the risk of COVID-19.

Dear Patient(s):

We hope this update finds you and your family in good health. Our community has been through a lot over the last few months, and all of us are looking forward to resuming our normal habits and routines.

While many things have changed, one thing has remained the same: our commitment to your safety.Infection control has always been a top priority for our practice and you have seen this during your visits to our office. Our infection control processes are made so that when you receive care, it’s both safe and comfortable. We want to tell you about the infection control procedures we follow in our practice to keep patients and staff safe.

Our office follows infection control recommendations made by the American Dental Association (ADA), the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as well as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). We follow the activities of these agencies so that we are up-to-date on any new rulings or guidance that may be issued. In addition, we review all updates on a daisy basis that are given to us from these agencies especially with pandemic.

You will notice some changes when it is time for your next appointment. We made these changes to help protect our patients and staff. For example:Our office will communicate with you beforehand to ask some screening questions. You’ll be asked those same questions again when you are in the office. We have hand sanitizer that we will ask you to use when you enter the office. You will also find some in the reception area and other places in the office for you to use as needed.

You may see that our waiting room will no longer offer magazines, children’s toys and so forth, since those items are difficult to clean and disinfect. Appointments will be managed to allow for social distancing between patients. That might mean that you’re offered fewer options for scheduling your appointment. We will do our best to allow greater time between patients to reduce waiting times for you, as well as to reduce the number of patients in the reception area at any one time.

We look forward to seeing you as well as your family again and are happy to answer any questions you may have about the steps we take to keep you, and every patient, safe in our practice. To make an appointment, please call our office at office at 908-753-5000.

THE NEW NORMAL AT THE DENTIST!!!

Due to COVID-19 there are many changes that have been put into effect by the American Dental Association, Center for Disease Control and the Governor.

When coming to the office for any all appointments all patients are required to wear a mask and we like for all patients to wear gloves as well. All personal items including food and beverages will need to remain in vehicles. If a a whole family is scheduled only one person at a time will be allowed in the office.

Once you arrive you will need to call the office from your vehicle and you will be instructed to come in or to wait in your vehicle to we inform you to come in. At the time when you are instructed to come in we will open all doors for you. We ask that you sign it and the pen will be sanitized after each use. If you have a cell phone we will ask you to put in plastic and leave on the table provided. You will then be asked to wash your hands or use hand sanitizer. Lastly, you will be instructed to rinse your mouth with a special solution.

After your appoint you will be provided with any necessary treatment plans and appointments.
