What is a Pediatric Dentist?:

Pediatric Dentistry is a dental specialty that focuses on the oral health and development of children from infancy to late adolescence. After four years of dental school, a pediatric dentist must complete two to three additional years of rigorous study and hands-on training that prepares them to meet the dental needs of infants, children, and adolescents, including persons with special health care needs. This training includes an extensive study of growth and development, child and adolescent psychology, caries prevention, nutrition, behavior management techniques, advanced restorative care, pediatric oral pathology, hospital dentistry, and the management of special needs and medically compromised children. "When is my kid going to lose their first tooth?!" If you've got a wiggly-tooth watch happening at your house, here's the reassuring answer: most kids lose their first tooth somewhere between ages 5 and 7, and there's a wide range of "normal." Some kids start earlier, some later, and it usually follows the same order the baby teeth came in. So if a friend's kid lost one first, don't worry, it's not a race. This is the face a lot of our littlest patients remember from their very first visit, and that's exactly the point. Our hygienists and assistants are pros at turning nervous into curious: showing kids the "tooth counter," letting them hold the "water tickler," and narrating everything in a way that makes it feel less like a procedure and more like an adventure.
