The most common reason for a root canal treatment is to clear an infection in the pulp. It's important to remove the infection because if this doesn't happen, the only place for an infection to go is into the bone," Dr. Tien Jiang, assistant professor in oral health policy and epidemiology at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine, points out. "This causes pressure on the bone and ligaments holding your tooth, which is why it's painful."

A common worry is that a root canal is painful. But today's anesthetics and improved techniques have made the procedure much easier to tolerate.

She and her daughter Elise traveled to the Dominican Republic to do what she does best. Fix smiles! Partnering with the Dental Community Fellowship ministry. They saw 570 patients and 160 accepted Christ. Dr. Ledford felt very blessed to be part of such a special team and ministry.

* Staff Spotlight*

Dr. Smith was raised in Rock Hill, South Carolina and graduated from the College of Charleston with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. He then attended the College of Dental Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina where he met his future wife, Jana. After graduating in 1995, he and Jana opened Smith Family Dentistry in Mauldin where they practiced together for almost 25 years. The Drs. Smith have two wonderful children, Connor who will is attending the University of South Carolina and Kylee who is a graduate of Clemson University. Dr. Smith’s favorite aspect of practicing dentistry is the long-term relationship he develops with his patients. He wants them to feel as if they are part of his family, not just another dental patient.

When not practicing dentistry, Dr. Smith enjoys spending time with his family. You can catch them cheering on the Carolina Gamecocks or hanging out with Mickey and friends at Disney World. If you want to get on his good side, start a conversation about anything Star Wars, as he is a massive fan. As a child of the 1980’s, he also loves playing classic arcade games from his era and even maintains a small arcade at his home.

*Staff Spotlight* with Birthday Wishes

Dr. Roberts is a graduate of Clemson University and also a graduate of the Medical University of South Carolina where she received her Doctor of Dental Medicine. She graduated from MUSC with the highest honors and was first in her class and was also inducted into the Omicron Kappa Upsilon (OKU) Honor Dental Society. Although Dr. Roberts has received many prestigious awards, she feels most humbled by the one she received from her peers. Her classmates in dental school voted her as the “Classmate you would most want to be your dentist.”

Dr. Roberts appreciates all facets of comprehensive dental care. She takes
joy in getting to know her patients. Dr. Roberts is committed to staying
current on dental materials and techniques in order to provide the
highest quality of care for her patients.

Dr. Roberts also has a heart for mission work and has traveled to South America and Africa to provide dental work to underserved patients.

She and her husband, Jordan, have five lovely children.Together they enjoy spending time with family and friends, and cheering for their Clemson Tigers. On the weekends, she likes to visit local Simpsonville businesses and parks.

Dr. Leigh Ledford received her DMD degree from the Medical University of South Carolina in 1998. Subsequently, she opened a private practice in Simpsonville, S.C. During the last 25 years of practice, Dr. Ledford has had the privilege of being taught and exposed to the latest techniques and developments in modern dentistry. Sitting alongside some of the leading cosmetic dentists of our time has been invaluable in the learning process. With many hours of post graduate training in the treatment of Advanced Occlusal Disease and disorders of the Temporal Mandibular Joint (TMJ), she has developed the skills necessary to not only treat minor restorative problems but also to be able to solve more complex restorative and aesthetic challenges.

Drawing on her years of advanced study and practical experience, Dr. Ledford sees each of her patients as unique individuals and treats them with the gentle and considerate care they deserve while providing attractive and functional restorations. This is the excellence her patients have come to expect through her many years of practice.

Dr. Ledford has also received certification from the Triangle Dental Institute after having completed 192 hours of continuing education in the study of Implantology. She is also a member of The International Congress of Oral Implantologists, as well as a member of The Implant Prosthetic Section of the IOCI.

Because service is of great importance to her, she also enjoys volunteering at the Free Medical Clinic of Greenville. She serves on the Foundation Board of the South Carolina Dental Association, is a member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, The American Dental Association, and The Greenville Dental Society.
