✨ Hospital Dental Treatment: What Parents Should Know ✨
As parents, it’s completely normal to feel uneasy when dental treatment is recommended under general anesthesia in a hospital setting. We understand that hesitation because we’re parents too.
As pediatric dental providers, our responsibility is always to recommend what is safest and best for your child’s overall health. For some children, especially those with extensive dental needs, severe decay, infection, pain, or high anxiety, hospital-based treatment is truly the safest option.
🏥 We are credentialed and have hospital privileges at:
• Adventist Shady Grove Hospital (7 years)
• MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital (13 years)
🔍 What does “hospital privileges” actually mean?
Dentists cannot simply choose to work in a hospital operating room. To provide care in this setting, we must:
• Apply through a formal hospital credentialing process
• Submit proof of advanced training, education, and experience
• Undergo background checks and peer review
• Be approved by the hospital’s medical board
• Maintain ongoing credentials, case reviews, and compliance
Only after meeting these strict requirements are dentists granted permission to treat patients in the operating room alongside pediatric anesthesiologists, CRNAs, nurses, and surgical staff.
🛡️ Why the hospital setting matters:
• Fully controlled and monitored environment
• Pediatric anesthesia specialists present at all times
• Continuous monitoring from start to finish
• Ability to complete all necessary treatment safely in ONE visit
🦷 Baby teeth matter.
Healthy baby teeth support eating, speaking, confidence, and proper development. Our goal is to restore them properly so the work lasts until those teeth naturally exfoliate when they’re ready.
We take great pride in our hospital teams and in providing safe, compassionate, high-quality care. Even when this recommendation feels overwhelming at first, please know it’s made with your child’s safety and long-term well-being as the top priority. Always.
We’re here to answer your questions, walk through concerns, and support your family every step of the way.
