🦷✨ My daughter’s dental visit!

No fear. No hesitation. Noa hopped right into the chair like she owned the place. 😄

I guess all those mornings and nights spent brushing together paid off. We talk about taking care of our teeth at home, and today she showed just how comfortable and confident she is with the whole process.

Mia was there too, leading by example and making sure her little sister knew the dental office is a fun place to be. 💕

Moments like these remind me that healthy habits start at home, and confidence grows from familiarity.

A week ago, while taking my daughter Lauren to swim practice, I had a bad fall and broke two front teeth 😔

Huge thank you to Drs. Crawford, the husband-and-wife team and owners of Fenton Family Dental, for taking such incredible care of me and restoring my smile.

I’m so grateful for your time, generosity, and skill. If you’re looking for a dentist for cosmetic dentistry, Invisalign, or comprehensive dental care, I can’t recommend them enough. Thank you both! ✨🦷

Some of the team members that are always present during a dental surgery in the hospital setting.

For some children, dental treatment under general anesthesia is necessary, but where that anesthesia is provided matters just as much as how it’s provided.

🏥 1. Hospitals Are Designed for Deep Anesthesia

General anesthesia places the body into a controlled, unconscious state. Hospitals are specifically built for this level of care and include:
• Advanced airway equipment
• Emergency medications immediately available
• Monitoring (heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen, CO₂)
• Rapid-response medical teams if needed

Dental offices, even those that offer this level of sedation, are not designed or equipped to manage the same level of medical complexity as a hospital operating room.

🩺 2. A Full Medical Team Is Present in the Hospital

In a hospital OR, your child is cared for by multiple specialized professionals, including:
• Pediatric anesthesiologists or CRNAs
• Pediatric nurses trained in anesthesia care
• Surgical support staff
• Recovery room nurses monitoring your child after treatment

In an office setting, the dentist and limited staff often manage multiple roles at once. For lengthy or complex cases, that level of support is not equivalent.

🫁 3. Airway Safety Is Critical in Children

Children have smaller airways and are at higher risk for airway complications under deep anesthesia.

In a hospital:
• Advanced airway tools are immediately available
• Anesthesia providers focus solely on breathing and vital signs
• If airway support is needed, it can be managed instantly

This level of airway safety cannot be replicated in a typical dental office.

Our recommendation is never about convenience. It is about:
✔ Safety
✔ Medical support
✔ Completing treatment thoroughly in one visit
✔ Protecting your child’s overall health and well-being

We choose the setting that gives your child the highest level of care possible. For extensive dental treatment, general anesthesia in a hospital setting is the safest option.

✨ Hospital Dental Treatment: What Parents Should Know ✨

As parents, it’s completely normal to feel uneasy when dental treatment is recommended under general anesthesia in a hospital setting. We understand that hesitation because we’re parents too.

As pediatric dental providers, our responsibility is always to recommend what is safest and best for your child’s overall health. For some children, especially those with extensive dental needs, severe decay, infection, pain, or high anxiety, hospital-based treatment is truly the safest option.

🏥 We are credentialed and have hospital privileges at:
• Adventist Shady Grove Hospital (7 years)
• MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital (13 years)

🔍 What does “hospital privileges” actually mean?
Dentists cannot simply choose to work in a hospital operating room. To provide care in this setting, we must:
• Apply through a formal hospital credentialing process
• Submit proof of advanced training, education, and experience
• Undergo background checks and peer review
• Be approved by the hospital’s medical board
• Maintain ongoing credentials, case reviews, and compliance

Only after meeting these strict requirements are dentists granted permission to treat patients in the operating room alongside pediatric anesthesiologists, CRNAs, nurses, and surgical staff.

🛡️ Why the hospital setting matters:
• Fully controlled and monitored environment
• Pediatric anesthesia specialists present at all times
• Continuous monitoring from start to finish
• Ability to complete all necessary treatment safely in ONE visit

🦷 Baby teeth matter.
Healthy baby teeth support eating, speaking, confidence, and proper development. Our goal is to restore them properly so the work lasts until those teeth naturally exfoliate when they’re ready.

We take great pride in our hospital teams and in providing safe, compassionate, high-quality care. Even when this recommendation feels overwhelming at first, please know it’s made with your child’s safety and long-term well-being as the top priority. Always.

We’re here to answer your questions, walk through concerns, and support your family every step of the way.
