Saturday AFDSS Reflection
The final day of AAOSH 2026 brought together topics that patients experience every day: dry mouth, the quality of the healthcare experience, periodontal-systemic health, pregnancy, the microbiome, and prevention. My biggest takeaway is that excellent care begins with listening to the whole person. At AFDSS, we will continue strengthening how we recognize risk, support anxious patients, explain prevention, and coordinate appropriate follow-up. I am returning with questions to explore, practices to review, and a renewed commitment to thoughtful, evidence-informed care.

Friday Clinical Learning

On Day 2, at AAOSH 2026, We explored how inflammation, blood sugar, sleep, saliva, and oral health can influence the way we think about prevention. Sessions on the glycation cascade, medical-dental integration, and dentistry as a front door to precision medicine reinforce an important principle: the mouth should not be considered in isolation.
At AFDSS, learning matters when it helps us ask better questions, explain risk more clearly, and guide patients toward appropriate care and referrals. Education is not a diagnosis, and oral-systemic associations must be communicated carefully: but they can help people act earlier and participate more confidently in their health.

Thursday Learning Reflection
Day one at AAOSH 2026 was centered on a question that matters deeply to our work: what must change when oral health is understood as part of whole-body health? Thursday’s program included the Xylitol Science Exchange, the implementation stage, and Dr. Graham Lloyd-Jones’ lecture on oral-systemic disease. My focus was not simply to collect information. It is to identify what can be translated responsibly into clearer patient education, earlier prevention, stronger collaboration, and better follow-through at AFDSS. I will share one practical lesson at the conclusion of the conference.

A MOMENT OF RECOGNITION AND A DOOR OPENING TO GREATER COMMUNITY IMPACT
I am deeply honored to share this post from Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich following his visit to Artistic Family Dentistry of Silver Spring.
Receiving this recognition during Black Business Month is profoundly meaningful, not only to me as a Black immigrant woman, dentist, and entrepreneur, but also to the extraordinary AFDSS team whose compassion, resilience, and dedication bring our mission to life every day.
During the visit, we had the privilege of presenting the Bikoi Model™, our prevention-centered, whole-person framework connecting clinical excellence, emotional well-being, patient education, prevention, and the oral-systemic health connection.
We also shared our personalized Care Plan, patient Prevention Kit, twelve months of patient-survey insights, the work of the Dr. Bikoi Foundation®, and our vision for Prevention First™ community-health partnerships.
I am grateful to County Executive Elrich and his team for listening thoughtfully to our story, recognizing our contribution, and engaging with our vision for healthier individuals, stronger families, and more connected communities.
