๐ฆท WHAT YOU SEE: A smiling dental hygienist ready to clean your teeth. ๐
WHAT YOU DONโT SEE: The years of education and clinical training behind that smile. The constant focus required while working in a space measured in millimeters. The responsibility of reviewing your health history, medications, X-rays, periodontal measurements, and oral health. The mental checklist running through our heads the entire appointment. The pressure of staying on schedule when one unexpected finding can change everything. The neck, shoulder, hand, and back strain that comes from treating patients all day. The patients who walk in terrified of the dentistโand the extra care it takes to help them feel safe. The conversations about gum disease that aren't always easy to have. The instruments we sharpen, rooms we turn over, notes we document, and infection-control protocols happening behind the scenes.
And sometimesโฆ the first thing we hear when you sit down is:
โI HATE THE DENTIST.โ ๐
But we smile anyway.
Because underneath the scrubs, loupes and mask is someone who chose a career centered around taking care of people. โค๏ธ
After nearly two decades in dental hygiene, I can tell you this profession is much more than โcleaning teeth.โ
We educate. We listen. We notice changes. We calm fears. We advocate for our patients. And yesโฆ we remove a whole lot of calculus. ๐๐ฆท
So the next time you see your hygienist, remember there is a lot happening behind that smile.
And to my fellow hygienists: I see you. Keep showing up. Your work matters. ๐ซถ
Patientsโwhat's something your dental hygienist has done that made an appointment better for you? ๐
