Most dental insurance rules reset every year on December 31st. If you do not use the money your insurance gives you for dental work by then, you lose it forever. It does not roll over to next year.Since there are only about 15 weeks left in the year, dental offices will get very busy soon.
How to use your benefits before they disappear:
*Get your free cleaning: Most insurance plans pay for two free cleanings a year. If you have only had one so far, book the second one now before appointments fill up.
*Fix cavities now: If you already paid your deductible (the initial amount you have to pay out of your own pocket) for this year, your insurance is currently paying its max share. Getting fillings or root canals done now will cost you much less than waiting until January when your deductible resets.
*Split up big, expensive procedures: If you need major work like a crown or an implant that costs more than your insurance limit, ask your dentist to do half the work now and wait until next year to do the rest. That way, you can use this year's money and next year's money to help pay for it.
*Spend your FSA money: If you have a Flexible Spending Account (FSA) through work, that money usually expires on December 31st too. Use it to pay for any out-of-pocket dental costs.
