‼️✨Dental Tip Tuesday✨‼️
Teeth grinding—clinically known as bruxism—is more common than many people realize. It often happens during sleep, which means you may not even know you’re doing it until symptoms appear. One of the most effective and widely recommended ways to manage this condition is by wearing a night guard.
A night guard is a custom or over-the-counter dental appliance worn over your teeth while you sleep. Its primary role is simple but important: it creates a protective barrier between your upper and lower teeth. Without that barrier, grinding can gradually wear down enamel, leading to tooth sensitivity, cracks, or even fractures. Over time, untreated grinding can also contribute to gum recession and changes in your bite.
Beyond protecting your teeth, a night guard can help reduce strain on your jaw muscles and joints. Many people who grind their teeth wake up with headaches, earaches, or jaw pain—symptoms often linked to stress placed on the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). By cushioning the pressure, a night guard allows these muscles to relax more during sleep, which can lead to better overall comfort.
There are different types of night guards available. Over-the-counter versions are more affordable and accessible, but they may not fit as precisely. Custom-made guards, provided by a dentist, are molded specifically to your teeth and tend to be more comfortable and durable. While they cost more upfront, they often offer better long-term protection.
In short, wearing a night guard is a practical, preventative step if you grind your teeth. It helps protect your dental health, reduces discomfort, and can prevent more serious (and expensive) issues down the line. If you suspect you grind your teeth—especially if you notice jaw pain, worn teeth, or frequent headaches—it’s a good idea to discuss your options with a dental professional.
