Dr. Hounshell graduated from the UNC School of Dentistry at Chapel Hill in 1982. He was blessed to finish dental school early and worked as a clinical instructor until taking the State Licensure Boards. He received numerous senior dental student awards including: the Senior Student Award showing the greatest interest, Knowledge and Proficiency in General Dentistry, OKU Honorary Dental Society and the Southeastern Academy of Prosthodontics Senior Dental Student Award.
