Is your dental practice a workplace worth staying in? 🤔

The ADHA recently reframed the dental hygiene shortage entirely, concluding that dentistry doesn’t have a shortage of qualified professionals — it has a shortage of workplaces that retain them.

Today's dental employees want more than a paycheck. They want a sense of belonging, healthy leadership, clear expectations, and burnout prevention.

Dentists can spot a hairline fracture in seconds. So why can't we spot the moment our own capacity starts to crack?

In her latest article, Laura Schwindt, DDS, shares a hard-won truth from her own years as a solo-practice owner: burnout doesn't start as a crisis. It starts as a slow erosion, you rationalize — because you can still show up and perform.

Her reframe is one every practice leader needs to hear: burnout isn't a failure of resilience. It's a failure of early detection.

Her three-step starting point:

1️⃣ Catch it early — look for subtle signals, not exhaustion

2️⃣ Name what's off — no diagnosis or drama required

3️⃣ Adjust before it becomes urgent

We'd never tell a patient to wait until the pain is unbearable. We shouldn't ask it of ourselves either.

The conversation around the dental hygiene shortage is changing.

The American Dental Hygienists' Association recently issued an updated position statement reframing the issue entirely. After reviewing three independent bodies of research, the ADHA concluded that the profession is not facing a shortage of qualified professionals — it is facing a shortage of workplaces worth staying in.

In my experience as a Practice Management Coach and Consultant, I hear the same story from front desk personnel, Dental Assistants, and Administrative employees.

That should make every dentist stop and think.

Employee retention is rarely achieved by salary alone.

Retention is built through:

✔️ Healthy leadership
✔️ Effective operating systems
✔️ Respectful and consistent communication
✔️ Well-developed teamwork
✔️ Clear expectations
✔️ Growth opportunities
✔️ Burnout prevention ➡ Burnout Busted
✔️ Feeling valued and heard

Today's dental employees want more than a paycheck. They want workplaces where they can grow professionally while maintaining their well-being, a balanced lifestyle, and a sense of belonging.

The practices that understand this shift will be the ones that retain great people — and rise well above average.

Work culture is no longer separate from operations.

Work culture IS your most powerful competitive advantage.
