😷🦷💉 I am proud to be a Registered Dental Hygienist! I don't think many people realize how much education I have & that I have earned the equivalent degree of a Registered Nurse, who everyone is familiar with & respects.

A fellow RDH (Registered Dental Hygienist) posted this and I'm following suit (with some mods). Not a lot of people realize that hygienists are so well educated in preparation for their career in dentistry. Many people mistakenly think that anyone can walk in a dental office from off the street and train on the job to be a dental hygienist.

DID YOU KNOW THAT THIS IS WHAT I HAD TO DO TO "JUST CLEAN YOUR TEETH"?

Students must complete the grueling Dental Hygiene program with a GPA of 3.0 or better.

Basic requirements:

• CPR Health Care Provider certified
• Proof of immunity and health declaration
• Drug screening
• Background Check Requirements

Prerequisites to be accepted to hygiene programs (2 years total):

• Chemistry 101 (with lab)
• Organic Chemistry I (with lab)
• Biology 101 (with lab)
• Human Anatomy and Physiology I (with lab)
• Human Anatomy and Physiology II (with lab)
• Microbiology (with lab)
• ENG101
• ENG102
• College Algebra
• Statistics
• Speech 101
• Psychology 101
• Psychology 102 (or child psychology in place)
• Sociology 101

During hygiene program (another 2 years):

• Pharmacology
• Oral Pathology
• Emergency Medicine
• Dental Radiography I and II (with lab)
• Head and Neck Anatomy
• Pre-Clinical Dental Hygiene (bookwork and lab)
• Nutrition
• Embryology and Histology
• Prevention of Dental Disease
• Dental Hygiene Theory I, II, III, IV (coincides with Dental Hygiene Clinic I, II, III, and IV as lab)
• Dental Materials I and II (with lab)
• Practice Management
• Periodontics I and II
• Community Oral Health I and II
• Ethics and Jurisprudence

Now after graduation..... and before I can "clean your teeth" we also have to take and pass all these state/regional and National Board Exams...

--8 hour State/regional Clinical Exam with a live patient that has to meet certain requirements
--8 hour written National Board exam
--4 hour written/computerized State/regional Board Exam
—2 hour state/regional local anesthesia Board Exam

I HOPE YOU REMEMBER THE NEXT TIME YOU GET YOUR TEETH CLEANED THAT YOUR DENTAL HYGIENIST IS MORE THAN "JUST A PERSON WHO CLEANS YOUR TEETH". There is a lot more to the job than "cleaning teeth". I'm an educator as well and sometimes I feel like a therapist!
