Why might an endodontist take more than one X-ray of the same tooth?

A tooth is three-dimensional, while a traditional dental X-ray creates a two-dimensional image. Changing the angle can reveal information that may be hidden when viewed from only one direction.

Each image offers another perspective—and those perspectives can help create a more complete understanding of the tooth.

Taking the time to explain each step can make a root canal feel much less intimidating.

Dave recently shared that Dr. Wolcott explained his entire procedure before treatment. Once he put on the headphones and settled in with SportsCenter on the overhead TV, he was able to relax—and he was thrilled with how he felt the following morning.

“I will recommend this office to my friends and family if they ever need a root canal.”

Thank you, Dave, for trusting Dr. Wolcott and our team with your care. We’re so glad you felt informed, comfortable and supported throughout your visit!

The instruments used inside a tooth need to do something remarkable: follow narrow, curved pathways without changing the tooth’s natural direction.

Many modern endodontic files are designed with enough flexibility to carefully navigate these curves. Different sizes and shapes may be used throughout treatment to clean and prepare the canal system.

They may be small, but they are designed for highly specialized work.

What fills the space inside a tooth after root canal treatment?

A biocompatible material called gutta-percha is commonly used to fill and seal the cleaned canals. Its purpose is to occupy the space where the pulp once was and help protect the canal system from future contamination.

It may not be the most familiar part of root canal treatment, but it performs an important job inside the tooth.

Sometimes, a root canal is difficult to locate because the space inside the tooth has become extremely narrow or calcified.

Calcification can happen naturally with age or develop after an injury. The canal may still be there—it is simply harder to identify and navigate.

This is one reason specialized endodontic training matters. Dr. Wolcott understands how to evaluate these challenging cases and determine the most appropriate next step for your tooth.

Can a tooth with a crown still need a root canal?

Yes. A crown protects and restores the outside of a tooth, but the tissue inside can still become inflamed or infected.

This does not automatically mean the crown failed. Deep decay, an earlier injury, a crack, or changes within the tooth can create a problem beneath an otherwise normal-looking restoration.

A focused endodontic evaluation can help determine what is happening under the surface—and whether the tooth can be treated.

“About how long will my root canal take?”

It's a completely reasonable question—and one without a one-size-fits-all answer.

Teeth vary considerably in their anatomy and complexity. The condition of the tooth and what we find during treatment can also influence the treatment plan.

Some cases may be completed in one appointment, while others may require additional time or another visit.

Our priority isn't racing the clock.

It's giving your tooth the attention the case requires.

Root canal treatment may solve the problem inside the tooth—but caring for the tooth doesn't necessarily end there.

After endodontic treatment, patients are often sent back to their general dentist for the appropriate permanent restoration.

Depending on the tooth and your individual situation, that may include a filling, crown or another type of restoration.

Why does it matter?

The final restoration helps protect the treated tooth and allows your dental team to complete the process of getting it back to everyday function.

Endodontists and general dentists each play an important role in your care.

If you've ever had root canal treatment, you may remember a small protective sheet placed around the tooth.

It's called a dental dam.

It isolates the tooth being treated and helps maintain a clean, dry treatment area while protecting the rest of your mouth.

It's a simple-looking part of an endodontic procedure—but an important one.

Sometimes great care comes down to details patients may never think twice about.

Ever wonder why an endodontist may test several teeth when only one seems to be bothering you?

That's because symptoms don't always point neatly to their source.

Comparing how neighboring teeth respond to temperature, pressure, tapping and other diagnostic tests can provide valuable clues about what's happening.

Think of it as detective work for your tooth.

Each response adds another piece to the diagnostic puzzle.
