This case required us to get a little creative with the design.

This patient traveled from California for 10 upper veneers, but she was missing both an upper and lower canine. To create the symmetry we wanted, we carefully designed her premolar to take on the appearance and proportions of a canine, allowing the entire smile to feel balanced despite the missing teeth.

Cases like this are a good example of why smile design is about much more than making individual teeth look good. Every tooth has to make sense within the smile as a whole.

There’s a lot more happening in this case than simply going brighter.

With 10 upper and 10 lower veneers, we were able to rethink the proportions of the smile as a whole. The original front teeth appeared shorter and broader, with differences in length and contour that disrupted the progression from the central incisors out toward the canines.

For the final design, we added length through the anterior teeth, refined the width-to-length proportions, created more intentional symmetry between the right and left sides, and established a smoother progression of the incisal edges across the smile.

Treating both the upper and lower arches also gave us the ability to create consistency between them in color, shape, and overall design.

The result is brighter, but more importantly, the dimensions and proportions now work together as one smile.

"Veneer rot" is one of the most common questions I get online.

The veneers themselves aren't the cause. Poor margins, failing restorations, or neglect over time are what allow bacteria to reach the tooth underneath.

This patient had older veneers that needed to be replaced because decay had developed around and beneath them. We removed the existing restorations, treated the teeth, and created a new, properly sealed smile that is healthier, stronger, and significantly more aesthetic.

When veneers are done correctly, protecting the underlying teeth is just as important as creating a beautiful smile.

A smile can be complex behind the scenes and still look effortless in the end.

This transformation involved existing veneers, implant dentistry, and a complete redesign of the upper and lower smile. But when I’m planning a case like this, I don’t want the final result to look like a collection of different restorations.

The color, proportions, contours, symmetry, and tiny details all have to work together so the eye simply sees **one natural, cohesive smile.**

This patient came to me with significant crowding and discoloration, but going straight into veneers would have required us to make compromises I didn’t want to make. Instead, we started with Invisalign to get the teeth into better positions first.

Once everything was aligned, we were able to be extremely conservative with preparation and place 12 upper and 12 lower ultra-thin veneers. We focused on brightening her smile, adding length, improving symmetry, and designing proportions that highlighted her natural features.

The transformation is significant, but she still looks like herself. In fact, she feels more like herself than ever.

That’s always the goal. Not to change your smile into someone else’s, but to understand what needs to happen clinically so we can create the best version of yours.
