If you deal with dry mouth, this is not just a comfort issue. It’s something that can quietly undo even the best dentistry if it’s not managed properly! This is a patient who has had multiple crowns throughout her life and because of severe dry mouth (that she has been unable to correct with medication), her teeth were just breaking off at the gum line, and every single tooth had cavities. Her gums were incredibly infected. You can see the redness in the bleeding that was happening. This patient needed to address every single tooth in her mouth to get the final rehabilitation that we ended up doing.

We went brighter, made the size a little bit smaller, and tried to make things as resilient as possible for her long-term because the dry mouth is still going to be there. Sometimes in these cases implants do better than more restorative work.

Dental insurance is basically a coupon book with an expiration date….yes I said it. Because it helps a little but it was never designed to fully cover quality care.

And I say this gently because I know it’s frustrating but it’s not your dentist deciding what gets covered, it’s the insurance agencies. Most plans haven’t meaningfully changed in years while materials, technology, and standards of care have. So when something isn’t covered, it doesn’t mean it isn’t necessary, it just means the system is outdated

Use your insurance when it helps, but please don’t let it be the only thing guiding your decisions.
