41%. That’s how many new ortho patients come from a general dentist referral. It has held steady as the single largest source, bigger than patient referrals. 📊 But a paper referral leaves the patient to do all the work. Some make the call. Some forget. Some hear about another practice at soccer practice. 🦷 Bright Referral makes the referral digital, easy to track, and followed up by the practice, so fewer patients slip through.

“Orthodontists are the coolest of the oral health specialties.” 😎

Liz Sudit said it, not us. (We’re not arguing.)

Nobody shops around for an endodontist. But ortho? Patients compare notes on the soccer field, at cocktail parties, at school pickup. Liz explains why that’s a gift for word of mouth and also a risk at the moment of referral.

🎙️ Episode 2 of Straight Talk with EPIC4 is out now, with Liz Sudit of Bright Referral.

That's a twelve-point shift in six years, and it isn't because the clinical work got less appealing. Ownership got more expensive and more complicated at the same moment that employed pathways got easier to say yes to.

The number nobody publishes is the one that matters. Of the doctors who are no longer owners, how many chose that, and how many defaulted into it?

"I had grown my practice so large I couldn't sell it." 🦷 Dr. Sami Webb spent 20+ years building Webb Orthodontics. Then she hit the wall a lot of practice owners don't see coming:

Too big for an associate to buy.
Too much to keep running alone.
And in her words, she'd "kind of stopped living."

She wasn't after the biggest check. She wanted the right partner: someone who would keep her patients, team and community cared for long after she steps back.

Epic Fact Friday is here again!! The average orthodontic practice runs on 13 people.

11 full-time. 2 part-time.

And about 1 in 10 of them leaves every year.

So "solo" ownership means rebuilding part of a dozen-person team, every year, between patients. 🔄

The owners who get ahead of it treat hiring like a system, not a scramble.

How much of your week goes to staffing instead of patients? 👇

25 years in practice & she’s used one cement.

We asked Dr. Fortney at Hidden Valley Orthodontics to name the single best product of his career and this was her answer:

A powder and a liquid he still mixes by hand, 3M Unitek Multi-Cure Glass Ionomer Band Cement, now under Solventum. 🧪

Bands, appliances, 3D appliances. Same cement since day one.

The reason she keeps reaching for it because it releases fluoride. In 25 years, she says she's seen next to no decay under any of her appliances.

What's the one product you'd never swap out? 👇
