As suspected for a while, now there's more clinical evidence demonstrating that some medical conditions may be more associated with oral health. In summary, the article reports that according to the CDC, 47% of people over the age of 30 have some form of periodontal disease. If left untreated, in addition to gingivitis escalating to periodontitis (a more serious form of the disease where gums can recede), where bone can be lost, and teeth may become loose, or even fall out, it's just as important to know that if the inflammation in your mouth goes untreated, there's evidence that some of the proteins responsible for that inflammation can spread throughout your body and can potentially damage other organs.
