Flossing may do more than protect your teeth and gums — new research suggests it could also be linked to a lower risk of certain types of stroke and an irregular heart rhythm called atrial fibrillation (AFib).

Researchers followed more than 6,000 adults for 25 years and found that people who flossed at least once a week had a lower risk of ischemic stroke, especially cardioembolic stroke — a type caused by blood clots traveling from the heart to the brain.

The study also found a lower risk of AFib among regular flossers. AFib is a common heart rhythm disorder that can increase stroke risk.

Scientists believe one possible reason is inflammation. Poor oral health and gum disease can trigger chronic inflammation in the body, which may affect blood vessels and heart health over time.

Compared to non-flossers, regular flossers showed:
• 22% lower risk of ischemic stroke
• 44% lower risk of cardioembolic stroke
• 12% lower risk of AFib

Researchers also noted that flossing alone is not enough to prevent stroke, but it may be one small part of an overall healthy lifestyle alongside proper diet, exercise, blood pressure control, sleep, and good oral hygiene.

Your mouth is connected to the rest of your body more than many people realize.

Chase Cromwell, P.G. was recently featured in the Louisiana Board of Professional Geoscientists' newsletter, recognizing the initiative he’s taken to support the next generation of geologists.

Chase has been working directly with geology students at local universities, starting with University of New Orleans, to talk about the importance of licensure and to walk them through the National Association of State Boards of Geology (ASBOG) exam process. He saw an opportunity to reach students while they’re still in school, when the timing, coursework, and momentum set them up for long-term success.

That effort is already making an impact. The Board has seen a noticeable increase in FG exam registrations over the last two testing cycles, particularly from UNO students. It’s a strong example of how individual initiative can strengthen the profession as a whole.

Well-earned recognition for Chase and meaningful work for the future of geology in Louisiana.

If a child continues their finger or thumb-sucking habit past their toddler years, it can negatively affect the growth of their jaws and the position of their teeth.

There's no need to worry about a baby or toddler with a thumb-sucking habit or a pacifier. These are perfectly healthy self-soothing habits that help a child feel safe and happy in a new or stressful situation (and most situations are potentially new and stressful for them). And when Baby feels safe and happy, that's more relaxing for the parents too!

Eventually, these habits begin to do more harm than good. Most children will grow out of them on their own by age 4, but if not, vigorous thumb-sucking can change the way developing adult teeth will come in and can even alter the shape of their dental arches. If they're still showing no signs of stopping, it's time to consider intervening.

It can be easier to discourage a pacifier habit because simply trimming off the end will make it much less appealing until the child loses interest. It's trickier to discourage thumbsucking. Foul-tasting topical aids don't always work. We recommend being encouraging and praising successes over punishing failures. Try to provide activities that keep both hands too busy for thumbsucking. At night, socks over their hands can be a helpful tactic!
