What if your kid's "cute" little smile is actually a warning sign?

When baby teeth come in snug against each other, no gaps, like a tidy little picket fence, parents think it looks adorable. But those teeth are supposed to have spaces between them, wide enough to slip a nickel between each one. That spacing leaves room for the bigger adult teeth coming later.

So when there are no gaps at all, it can be a sign the jaw isn't growing the way it should. Same with snoring, or breathing with the mouth open during sleep. None of it means something is wrong for certain, but the earlier we look, the more we can do, because we still have their growth on our side.

A great mechanic doesn't just change your oil. They tell you the part that's about to fail before it strands you on the highway.

That's how I think about dentistry. An average dentist looks for what's broken and fixes it. A great one is also watching for what's coming, so a small problem today doesn't become a much bigger and more expensive one a year from now.

Dentistry actually started as a branch of medicine. My degree is a DMD, a version of an MD. We're doctors, not tooth mechanics. So when you come in, I'm not just hunting for cavities, I'm trying to see the whole picture and predict what's ahead.

Should you tape your mouth shut at night? You've probably seen it all over your feed.
Here's my honest take. For most adults it isn't dangerous, though I'd never tape a young child's mouth.

The problem is that it doesn't fix anything.

If you're taping to force yourself to breathe through your nose, the real issue is that your tongue isn't sitting where it should or your lips aren't strong enough to seal on their own. Tape doesn't retrain any of that. You peel it off in the morning and the problem is still there. It can be a fine temporary helper while you do real treatment, but on its own it's literally a band-aid.

You've been in pain so long you forgot what it feels like not to be. What you might not know is that your headaches, neck and shoulder pain might be starting with your jaw.

For some people, they know their jaw is a problem but they don’t think there’s anything that can be done about it.

The clicking, the headaches they've folded into normal life. A lot of my patients had no idea it was treatable and figured their jaw was just messed up.

When the little disc in your jaw joint slips out of place, it gets inflamed, and inflamed tissue is painful and harder to keep where it belongs. Plus there are a lot of nerves in that area that radiate the pain elsewhere. We break that trauma loop with a quick laser treatment that calms the inflammation, and most people feel relief after the first session. Once we get that inflammation calmed down, we can also address other contributing factors.

One of my patients just went on a run without her inhaler for the first time in her life. We didn't treat her lungs. We treated her airway.

She's in her early twenties and has had exercise-induced asthma for as long as she can remember. But I could tell she had another issue. Her airway was being restricted by her narrow upper palate.

We used an expander called a MARPE. This device gently widens the cavity found at the roof of the mouth which serves as a conduit for both compartments. After just four millimeters, everything changed.

Here's the part that stays with me. If we'd caught this when she was seven, how much of growing up did she sit out because she couldn't keep up? We can't give her that back. What we can do is help her now and make sure the next kid doesn't wait until their twenties to find out their narrow airway entrance was really the problem.
