Did you know that taking hormonal birth control can impact your oral health? Changes in hormone levels can affect the blood supply to your gums and how your body responds to plaque. And, you guessed it, hormonal birth control can influence those hormone levels. 🦷

So what does that actually look like? Red, swollen or sensitive gums, inflammation, and even gum recession can all be connected to hormonal changes. Research cited by the Cleveland Clinic also shows that hormones like progesterone can increase the gums’ response to plaque and bacteria.

And there’s more: a study published in the Journal of Periodontology found that women using injectable birth control (DMPA) had a higher risk of periodontal conditions, including inflammation, plaque buildup and loss of gum tissue, compared with women who had never used it. (Taichman, LS., Sohn, W., Kolenic, G., Sowers, M., 2012).

Next time you visit your dentist, make sure to tell them what medications and birth control you're taking! It could make all the difference in how you care for your oral and overall health. ❤️

During puberty, hormonal changes can make gums more sensitive and increase the chance of redness, swelling, and bleeding. It’s one reason those oral hygiene habits your child learned when they were younger are still so important as they become more independent.

Parents, here’s a simple checklist to keep in mind:
🪥 Brush twice a day
🧵 Floss regularly
📅 Keeping routine dental appointment
👀 Watch for bleeding, redness, swelling, or persistent bad breath

If your child’s gums bleed when brushing or flossing, don’t ignore it. Bleeding can be a sign of gingivitis, an early and reversible form of gum disease. "My child gets nervous before dental visits. Any tips?" 💛 You asked — we're answering. Here are a few things that actually help:

✅ Talk about it beforehand but keep it simple and positive. "We're going to visit the dentist to take care of your teeth" is enough.

✅ Read or watch together, there are great books and videos made just for kids about dental visits. Familiarity helps.

✅ Bring their comfort item, a favorite stuffed animal or small toy is always welcome here.

✅ Tell us! When you arrive, let our team know your child feels nervous. We adjust. We go slow. That's what we do.

At My Kid's Dentist & Orthodontics, we've made it our job to make dental visits feel as comfortable as possible for little ones. Nervous kids are welcome. Wiggly kids are welcome. All kids are welcome.
