Sometimes the most rewarding cases are the ones that take a little extra time and effort. 😌

Skilyr came to us with relatively straight upper teeth, but she had a lower canine that never erupted and remained impacted beneath the gums. Impacted canines can be especially challenging in adults, and unfortunately, they don’t always respond to treatment the way we’d like.

Rather than giving up on the tooth, Dr. Peterson decided it was worth trying to save it.

🛠️ Treatment included:
• Pitts21 Pro self-ligating braces
• Space creation for the impacted canine
• Oral surgeon expose-and-bond procedure
• Guided eruption of the canine into the arch

Once enough space was created, we partnered with an oral surgeon to expose the tooth and attach a bracket so we could gradually guide it into position.

The process took time, patience, and teamwork—but it was worth it.

The result:
We successfully saved the impacted canine, brought it into function, and created an even more beautiful smile in the process. 🤩

✨ Let’s talk expanders! When are expanders needed in orthodontics? ✨

Many people think expanders are only used when there’s an obvious crossbite in the back teeth—but that’s not always the case.

In this patient’s smile, the lower back teeth had tipped inward to compensate for a narrow upper jaw. Because the teeth were compensating, there wasn’t a visible crossbite… but the jaw discrepancy was still there.

Teeth naturally adapt to the position of the jaws, which is why a full orthodontic diagnosis is so important. In this case, expansion was necessary to create proper arch form, improve function, and develop a broad, healthy smile.

Nadya came to our office wanting to improve her crowded and crooked teeth—but her case involved much more than simple alignment.

After a thorough evaluation, Dr. Peterson diagnosed:
• Impacted upper canines and blocked out lower canine
• Moderate upper & lower crowding
• Deep bite
• Retroclined upper incisors
• Class I malocclusion

To create her beautiful , treatment included:
🛠️ Pitts21 Pro self-ligating braces
🛠️ Broad archwires
🛠️ Bite bumps to open the bite
🛠️ Exposure and alignment of the impacted canines

One of the coolest parts of this case? Once enough space was created, Nadya’s impacted canines naturally improved their position significantly on their own. Instead of needing a separate surgical procedure with an oral surgeon or periodontist, Dr. Peterson was able to use his in-office laser to expose the teeth and bond the brackets himself.

Sometimes treatment plans evolve during treatment—and in this case, it saved Nadya from a much more invasive procedure. 🙌
