Many people think expanders are only used when there’s an obvious crossbite in the back teeth—but that’s not always the case.

In this patient’s smile, the lower back teeth had tipped inward to compensate for a narrow upper jaw. Because the teeth were compensating, there wasn’t a visible crossbite… but the jaw discrepancy was still there.

Teeth naturally adapt to the position of the jaws, which is why a full orthodontic diagnosis is so important. In this case, expansion was necessary to create proper arch form, improve function, and develop a broad, healthy smile.

Nadya came to our office wanting to improve her crowded and crooked teeth—but her case involved much more than simple alignment.

After a thorough evaluation, Dr. Peterson diagnosed:
• Impacted upper canines and blocked out lower canine
• Moderate upper & lower crowding
• Deep bite
• Retroclined upper incisors
• Class I malocclusion

To create her beautiful , treatment included:

🛠️ Exposure and alignment of the impacted canines
