Did you know that while a dental implant itself cannot get a cavity, the gums and bone holding it in place are still living tissue?

When bacteria build up around an implant, it can cause Peri-implantitis an advanced inflammatory disease that deteriorates your jawbone and can ultimately lead to implant failure.

While poor oral hygiene is a leading cause, the American Academy of Periodontology notes that smoking is a major risk factor for developing this condition. Smoking restricts blood flow to your gums, weakening your immune system's ability to fight off the bacteria that attack the bone around your implant.

Signs you might have Peri-implantitis:
🚩 Red, tender, or swollen gums around the implant
🚩 Bleeding when brushing or flossing
🚩 Gum recession or exposure of the implant screw

If you smoke and have dental implants, routine check-ups with a periodontist are absolutely vital to catch and treat infection before the bone is lost!
