Swelling after oral surgery is normal. It's your body's response to trauma, even carefully controlled surgical trauma.

But swelling can be managed. Ice in the first 24-48 hours reduces inflammation. Elevation helps. Compression with gauze helps. Anti-inflammatory medications help. Staying hydrated, avoiding strenuous activity, and following post-op protocols all make a difference in how much swelling you experience.

The goal isn't zero swelling- that's not realistic. The goal is controlled, manageable swelling that resolves in a reasonable timeline without complicating your healing.

This is another example of why aftercare matters. Patients who follow post-op instructions closely tend to have less dramatic swelling and faster overall recovery. It's not magic- it's biology working the way it's designed to work when conditions are optimized.
