From the "I knew it" file: "Which gender has the best oral hygiene habits? In the U.S., women exhibit better oral hygiene behaviors, including proactively visiting the dentist, than men, according to a study published May 8 in the Journal of Dentistry." 😅

Some good news from "Decisions in Dentistry": " A National Institutes of Health study of blood samples from more than 250,000 donors found that very few included genetic material from the novel coronavirus, and that those materials that were discovered contained low viral levels. Published in Transfusion, the study also demonstrated that the genetic material did not posses the ability to infect recipients with SARS-CoV-2. As such, individuals who donate blood and those who receive blood transfusions are not at increased risk for COVID-19.. According to the American Red Cross, someone in the United States requires blood and/or platelets every 2 seconds."
So feel free to donate too!

We are all under unusual amounts of stress these days. . .
If you feel you are clenching your teeth, let me know and we can talk about your options for protecting your teeth from yourself!

From "Decisions in Dentistry":
Dentists report treating more patients with stress-related oral health problems now than before the COVID-19 pandemic began, according to poll results compiled by the American Dental Association Health Policy Institute during the week of September 21. Data show the prevalence of the following dental problems increased: bruxism by 59.4%, chipped teeth by 53.4%, cracked teeth by 53.4%, and temporomandibular disorders by 53.4%. The prevalence of common oral diseases also increased: caries by 26.4% and periodontal diseases by 29.7%.

You may have read that the World Health Organization has advised people not to receive dental care that was not emergent. Here is the rebuttal from the American Dental Assoc.:
"The American Dental Association (ADA) respectfully yet strongly disagrees with the World Health Organization’s (WHO) recommendation to delay “routine” dental care in certain situations due to COVID-19.

“Oral health is integral to overall health. Dentistry is essential health care,” states ADA President Chad P. Gehani, D.D.S. “Dentistry is essential health care because of its role in evaluating, diagnosing, preventing or treating oral diseases, which can affect systemic health.”

The California Dental Assoc. is also in line with the ADA and added that the recommendations by the WHO (other than don't get fooled again :), are "not specific to California". Perhaps this recommendation holds true in areas were dental offices are not able to maintain proper protocols, however I'm not sure it holds so true here in San Mateo.
We are working very hard to maintain social distancing, disinfection protocols, etc. to keep our patients and our staff safe. I think San Mateo is on the right track. . . while our number of positive tests have gone up, our hospitalization rates have dropped nicely from early July.
Take good care and enjoy the summer heat!

Hallelujah!! A shred of good news!
" An experimental investigation conducted at Kansas State University’s Biosecurity Research Institute found that SARS-CoV-2 is unable to replicate in three common types of mosquitoes, making it impossible for them to transmit the virus to humans. Researchers discovered that the novel coronavirus failed to reproduce within the Aedes aegypti, Ae. Albopictus, and Culex quinquefasciatus species of mosquitoes, even when mosquitoes fed on people with the virus in their blood. This is excellent news as mosquito-born diseases kill millions of people each year across the globe."
I still hate to get bit though. .

Seems like the symptoms involved with this virus are never ending! Here's another one to be on the lookout for:

"Rash Inside Mouth May Be Symptom Of COVID-19, Small Study Suggests
Newsweek (7/20, Gander) reports, “A rash inside the mouth could be a symptom of COVID-19, according to a small study.” After examining “the mouths of 21 COVID-19 patients who had rashes on their skin to see if they had enanthem, or a rash inside the body on the mucous membrane,” researchers discovered “six (29 percent) of the patients had some form of enanthem in their mouths.” Furthermore, the findings indicate that “on average, it took around 12 days for the patients to develop a rash on their mucous membrane after they showed known COVID-19 symptoms,” and “most of the six patients (83 percent) had petechiae, or small purple, red, or brown spots in their oral cavities.” The findings were published in JAMA Dermatology.
This picture is not from a covid patient. . . just an example of oral petechaie.
Stay safe and healthy!

Careful which hand sanitizer you are using:
The United States Food and Drug Administration recently released a statement advising against the use of hand sanitizer manufactured by Mexico-based Eskbiochem SA de CV. Here's some good news for those of us who are still OK with fluoride!
"Community water fluoridation is not linked with an increased risk of osteosarcoma, according to a study published in the Journal of Dental Research. The findings refute a 1990 animal study that suggests fluoride ingestion as a possible risk factor for this type of cancer."
This is a picture of fluoride in its mineral form. . .

From Fast Company magazine:
"The study, in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, identifies the businesses that have the best overall risk-benefit profiles when weighing important factors such as essential value to shoppers and the economy, as well as relative risk of contracting COVID-19—or as one researcher put it, which businesses give us the most bang for our buck. At the top of the pile are banks, which are economically important yet uncrowded and visited infrequently and for short periods of time."

DO IT
(Probably worth the risk)

Banks
Dentists
Colleges and universities

Hurrah!! My profession is worth it :) We are working hard to make it safe and "worth it". Hope you all are surviving the shelter in place. Remember to stay with your oral hygiene routines!
